This course provides a critical examination of controversial current or recent cases in the Supreme Court. Background and current cases will be read using the paperback by Choper, et al., "Leading Cases in Constitutional Law" (2009), supplemented by reference to other cases as needed. The course will center on such politically controversial topical issues as, e.g., gun control, English- only laws, religious exemptions, abortion, homosexuality, hate speech, student rights, freedom of association, war and foreign affairs issues, and developments in such structural areas as, e.g., state sovereign immunity, and the Fourteenth Amendment and commerce powers of Congress. This course is closed to first-year students. Three hours.
