Description

This course examines the constitutional law of the First Amendment as it relates to issues of freedom of speech and press. The religion clauses are not covered except as they relate to expression issues. The primary goal of the course is to give students the tools and opportunity to think rigorously about First Amendment issues, now and in the future. Students are expected to study and be prepared to be examined on the evolution and current status of doctrine. However, most class discussions involve students making and debating normative and prudential arguments, and doctrine is generally discussed in that context.
