This seminar provides an introduction to international rules and institutions governing resort to armed force. The seminar also explores in some detail several contemporary controversies regarding the proper application of these rules and the proper roles of these institutions. Topics covered include: the UN Charter collective security scheme; regional collective security schemes; the international right to armed self defense; humanitarian intervention; counter-terrorism and the use of force; and international involvement in civil wars.
