Description
This seminar is an interdisciplinary speaker-based workshop on international human rights law. We will read works in progress by academics and will hear them presented by their authors. Roughly half of the class weeks will involve these outside speaker presentations. The other classes will involve discussions of background readings on international human rights along with class discussions of the papers to be presented by outside speakers. Students will be expected to write short, critical reaction papers for several of the papers presented, and to submit a final writing project. Topics range from the investigation and prosecution of crimes against humanity to the role of gender, culture, and religion in international law.
The seminar is open to all rising 2Ls and 3Ls and non-law graduate and professional students. It is limited to students who have taken or are taking courses at the graduate or professional level in international human rights, public international law, or international relations. Students must receive the professor's approval to enroll in the class. To request approval, please send a one-page resume and a list of relevant coursework to William Chandler at wchandler@law.utexas.edu. Those who are eligible will be accepted on a first-come, first-serve basis. Students with comparable coursework or practical human rights experience may request that the prerequisites be waived. To seek such a waiver, students should submit a short statement describing this coursework or practical experience (in addition to the one-page resume).
