This three-hour course teaches advanced legal analysis and selection of potential appellate arguments, as well as developing the highly judge-centric advocacy skills necessary to write top-notch appellate briefs and present winning oral arguments in courts of appeals. Students must complete one brief to the Court of Appeals and one Petition for Review to the Texas Supreme Court in a hypothetical case concerning defamation or business disparagement. Students also make at least three oral arguments concerning that same hypothetical case. Pertinent aspects of the rules of appellate procedure, relevant substantive defamation law, and professional ethics are also taught. The class meets once each week. There is no midterm or final exam.
