Students in the Environmental Clinic represent low-income individuals, local governments, and community groups seeking to improve environmental quality and protect public health. The Clinic’s projects include cases in federal and state courts, permitting and rulemaking proceedings before administrative agencies, and policy research. Students work on cases in teams, meeting with supervising clinic faculty on at least a weekly basis. In addition, the clinic frequently co-counsels cases with Texas legal aid organizations and works closely with legal and technical experts from national nonprofits.
Students also participate in a seminar in which they discuss substantive environmental laws, administrative law practice, working with clients, and ways in which the current environmental regulatory system does and does not protect public health and the environment. The seminar meets once a week for approximately two hours.
The Clinic is graded on a pass/fail basis. Students must complete and document approximately 12-15 hours of clinical work per week, in addition to seminar time and class preparation. There is no prerequisite for the Clinic.
