Eliot Cotton is an experienced attorney and venture capital executive who has returned to Texas Law from the private sector in New York City to lead a new initiative on business and the law. His career has explored the dynamic interplay between business strategies and legal frameworks. A unique perspective informs his academic work, bridging theoretical concepts with real-world applications in law and business.
Eliot Cotton held the position of Co-General Counsel and Managing Director at Riverstone Holdings, a New York-based private equity firm, from 2018 until 2024. There, he played a key role in investments in decarbonization, renewable energy, and infrastructure projects through both private equity and credit platforms.
Prior to joining Riverstone, Prof. Cotton was an attorney at Vinson & Elkins L.L.P., where he distinguished himself in capital markets, mergers and acquisitions, and private equity. He also spearheaded the firm’s venture capital and emerging companies practice in New York, showcasing his expertise in identifying and fostering high-potential startups and related investments.
Throughout his career, Prof. Cotton has consistently explored the dynamic interplay between business strategies and legal frameworks, particularly in the rapidly evolving energy sector. This unique perspective will inform his academic work, bridging theoretical concepts with real-world applications in law and business.
He received his B.A. from The University of Texas at Austin in 2007 and his J.D. from The University of Texas School of Law in 2010.
