Lauren Libby

Lauren Libby joins Texas Law as an Assistant Professor of Law. She received her J.D. from the University of Michigan Law School, and recently completed her Ph.D. in Law at Yale Law School, where she studied under Professor Nicholas Parrillo. 

Professor Libby’s scholarship examines the history of taxation, tax-exempt organizations, and tax administration, with a particular focus on how tax law shapes relationships between government, civil society, and private institutions. Her work combines legal history, administrative law, and political theory to explore the evolution of the federal tax system and the institutions that administer it. 

Her scholarship has appeared in the Washington University Law Review, and her latest work is forthcoming in the Iowa Law Review . She is also a frequent contributor to public legal debates, having written for Slate and Politico Magazine on tax policy, higher education, and executive power. 

Before entering academia, Professor Libby was an associate in the Tax Group at Covington & Burling LLP. She also served on the leadership team of Rise, a national civil rights nonprofit, where she helped lead successful legislative advocacy efforts and testified before Congress on the implementation of the Survivors’ Bill of Rights Act.
