Matthew C. Ryan

Matthew Ryan '97, who teaches courses on construction law and construction litigation, is a partner with Allensworth and Porter LLP, an Austin-based construction law firm. Professor Ryan has represented design professionals on disciplinary matters before the Texas Board of Architectural Examiners and the Texas Board of Professional Engineers. Previously he worked in Russian linguistics and also served as a law clerk to the Honorable Michael S. McDonald, United States Magistrate Judge for the Western District of Texas, El Paso Division.
Matt Ryan teaches courses on Construction Law and Construction Litigation. He is a partner with Allensworth and Porter, LLP, an Austin construction law firm, and he represents construction industry participants in dispute resolution, contract review and negotiation, lien and bond claims, regulatory matters, administrative claims and appeals, and other issues. His practice also includes a particular focus on representing design professionals on disciplinary matters before the Texas Board of Architectural Examiners and the Texas Board of Professional Engineers.
Mr. Ryan was a member of the governing council and officers' ranks of the Construction Law Section of the State Bar of Texas from 2007 until 2012. He has delivered multiple papers and speeches to that Construction Law Section at its annual conference, and to various other groups throughout his practice. He has also been repeatedly selected by his peers as a “Super Lawyer” in Construction Law by Texas Monthly magazine. Additionally, he served as the Chair of the Austin Young Construction Lawyers from 2004 to 2006, and he directed and chaired the Basic Course in Construction Law for the State Bar’s Construction Law Section in 2006. He has continuously served on the Board of Directors of the Austin Chapter of the American Institute of Architects since 2009. That chapter conferred Honorary AIA membership on him in 2012.
Prior to entering law school, Mr. Ryan worked in the Russian-language field and focused particularly on the program bringing approximately 50,000 refugees from the former Soviet Union, through the U.S. Department of State and Immigration and Naturalization Service. Mr. Ryan received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science from the University of Vermont, and he received his law degree from The University of Texas at Austin School of Law, where he served on the Texas International Law Journal. Immediately after law school, he served as a law clerk to the Honorable Michael S. McDonald, United States Magistrate Judge for the Western District of Texas, El Paso Division. He is licensed to practice law in Texas and Massachusetts.
