Created in response to the Recession, the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) was borne of the Dodd-Frank Act, the most significant piece of financial regulation since the Great Depression. Together, the legislation and the agency that it created are supposed to make the financial system safer, but critics claim it is too convoluted to understand, let alone implement.
