Join us for a discussion on Domestic Violence and Cruelty to Animals, focusing on the intersection of animal law and protections against abuse. This event will explore how animal cruelty is often linked to domestic violence, the legal frameworks addressing these issues, and the role of animal law in advocating for stronger protections. By examining current laws, enforcement challenges, and policy developments, we aim to highlight the importance of legal advocacy in safeguarding both human and animal victims from harm. Luch will be provided, RSVP.
Our speaker: Professor Katz is an Adjunct Professor at St. Mary’s School of Law, where she teaches Animal Law. She will also be teaching Animal Law beginning Fall 2025 semester at the University of Texas School of Law. Prof. Katz is also a criminal justice consultant for the Animal Legal Defense Fund, where she provides legal guidance concerning animal cruelty cases to law enforcement and prosecutors throughout the country. She has extensive experience in criminal prosecution, through serving as an Assistant District Attorney for two large counties in Texas. Throughout her tenure as a prosecutor, she primarily handled family violence and animal cruelty matters, and she currently provides training to law enforcement and prosecutors in Texas regarding the same. Prof. Katz spent several years as City Attorney for several Central Texas cities and has previously served as Chair of the State Bar of Texas Animal Law Section. She was recently awarded the Brown, Milligan, Rocha Distinguished Public Service Award from the International Municipal Lawyers Association for her service involving animal welfare legislation, training, and prosecution throughout the country. Prof. Katz currently serves full-time as an Assistant City Attorney for the City of Austin, where she advises the public safety departments, including the Austin Police Department and the Austin Regional Intelligence Center.
