The University of Texas joins with the Texas Access to Justice Commission and the other law schools in Texas to offer this internship program focused on increasing access to justice in communities without a law school nearby. Students will receive academic credit for working with non-profit providers of civil legal services to low-income individuals. Students will be placed across the state in the offices of Legal Aid of NorthWest Texas, Lone Star Legal Aid, the Texas Civil Rights Project, and Texas RioGrande Legal Aid. Each student will be supervised by an experienced attorney.
The internship program includes 7-12 weeks of full-time work at a placement, a two day orientation training in Austin, a final class in Houston, written assignments and online classes. Texas Law students will receive four (4) hours of academic credit (pass/fail) for the internship.
The Texas Access to Justice Commission and the William Wayne Justice Center for Public Interest Law will also provide a stipend to Texas Law students to help defray their unusual living expenses for this out-of-town internship. Only three (3) students from each law school will be selected.
