John Beckworth

John Beckworth has taught oil and gas law and Contracts over the past seven years after serving as associate dean at Texas Law from 2013-18. He co-founded and practiced in his own law firm in Houston, trying civil jury cases and appeals in both state and federal courts before later focusing on oil, gas, and energy law.
John Beckworth served as Associate Dean in the Law School from 2013 through 2018. He has taught Oil and Gas Law and Oil and Gas Contracts during the past seven years.
After completing his legal education in 1983, Mr. Beckworth joined Fulbright & Jaworski, LLP in Houston where he was an associate and a partner in the firm’s litigation section. Beginning in 1994, he co-founded and practiced in his own law firm in Houston, Watt Beckworth. During his time exclusively in private practice, Mr. Beckworth handled and tried civil jury cases and appeals in both state and federal courts. His career in private practice focused in energy law as counsel to companies and individuals in domestic and international oil and gas litigation, transactions, and arbitration. He is an Associate member of the American Board of Trial Advocates and he is Board Certified in Oil, Gas and Mineral Law by the Texas Board of Legal Specialization.
Mr. Beckworth is a former trustee of The University of Texas Law School Foundation and a current trustee of the LBJ Foundation. He is a member of the Federal Judicial Evaluation Committee and he is the 2024 Recipient of the Ernest E. Smith Lifetime Achievement Award presented by the Texas Journal of Oil, Gas and Energy Law.
