Abstract

Michael Klarman’s The Framers’ Coup: The Making of the United States Constitution (Oxford 2016) is an opponent’s history of the adoption of the American Constitution, written under the continuing influence of Charles Beard's Economic History of the Constitution. Beard and Klarman impose the issues of progressive movement upon the 1787-88 ratification, where they do not belong. Klarman's framework cannot explain the economic necessity that required the strong national government created by the Constitution.
