A basic knowledge of key economic concepts is crucial to understanding the financial and administrative decisions firm leaders must make to keep a firm on sound economic ground. Steven Schulman, Partner at Akin Gump Strauss Hauer & Feld LLP (Washington, DC) and adjunct professor at the Stanford Law School and the Georgetown University Law Center will tell you how firms operate as well as how to make yourself indispensable. You’ll also learn smart questions to ask in an interview. Mr. Schulman will also be speaking at the Akin Gump Pro Bono Scholars Program following this program. Please RSVP separately for each event. Students interested in making pro bono work an important part of their law firm careers are invited to learn more about the benefits of pro bono work. Steven Schulman, Pro Bono Partner at Akin Gump Strauss Hauer & Feld LLP (Washington, DC) will discuss law firm pro bono programs and the importance of pro bono service in your legal career. Information on Akin Gump’s Pro Bono Scholars Program will also be provided. Akin Gump’s Pro Bono program is now available in Dallas, New York, and Washington, DC. During the first summer, a student will receive $20,000 to work at the public interest organization. Lunch will be served. Co-sponsored by the UT Law Pro Bono Program and the Career Services Office. UT Law offers a dual degree with the Business School which allows students to get their JD/MBA in four years. There is an informational meeting for any student interested in running for a Texas Law Fellowship. The meeting will be held on Wednesday, January 26th from 3:15PM to 4:15PM in room 2.139. TLF provides funding for law students who work for public interest organizations for a minimum of 10 weeks over the summer. Students should attend the meeting for more information about the details and requirements for running. Spring Street Law meeting for new and returning members. Thursday, January 27th, 5:30, room # TBA

Returning Members: Please join us for a brief welcome back meeting that will include instructions on our new class sign up procedure.

New Members: Street Law is an exciting opportunity to escape the law school grind by getting involved in the Austin community. Street Law sends UT law students into Austin public schools to teach practical lessons about law, democracy, and human rights. Our lessons range from basic constitutional law to teen dating violence.

We provide step-by-step, objective-driven lesson plans, teaching materials, and training. No prior teaching experience is required, and we welcome veteran teachers with open arms. All of our hour-long lessons are scheduled for Fridays and taught in groups of (3) Street Law Members. While you're only required to teach one lesson a semester, you may, of course, sign up for as many lessons as you would like.

In addition to our Street Law curriculum, we have developed a new mentorship program; interested members can volunteer to mentor a student at Webb Middle School.

Over 1,100 candidates representing 75+ countries will have an opportunity to be considered for internship and permanent positions in the United States and abroad. The program attracts more than 120 of the top legal employers from around the world. ISIP 2011 will take place on NYU School of Law’s campus in Greenwich Village on January 28-29, 2011.
