In May 2012, Presidents, Prime Ministers, and other leaders from throughout the world will gather in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil at the United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development.  The gathering will mark the 20th anniversary of the first  “Earth Summit” also in Rio in 1992, which saw the adoption of major treaties on climate change and biodiversity and Agenda 21 – a blueprint for sustainable development.    Mr.  Scherr will describe the current state of preparations for the 2012 Earth Summit and the prospects for making progress on the green economy and governance in our increasingly interconnected and globalized world.

This is the first of two mandatory meetings for 2Ls & 3Ls who will be applying for judicial clerkships. UT Law Judicial Clerkship Advisors will discuss how to determine what courts you are competitive for, how to select judges, and how and when to apply for clerkships.

3Ls: For those of you who have already applied for clerkships, you do not need to attend this meeting. You should speak to your recommenders by late March to reaffirm their willingness to write letters or seek out new recommenders. You do not need to meet with a clerkship advisor unless you want to. However, you must attend the second mandatory meeting on April 5, 2011 to learn about the new application process.

Students can easily begin practicing MPTs NOW in order to be ready for the bar exam in July.

The topic is the new Air and Missile Warfare Manual, and Ambassador Henry Crumpton, former Coordinator for Counterterrorism, will deliver the keynote address at 5 pm, Thursday evening, in the Bass Lecture Hall at the LBJ School for Public Affairs. Students and faculty are invited to both the keynote and the panel discussions on Friday. The panel discussions are all day Friday in the Room 3.102 of the Thompson Conference Center. Jonathan Rapping is the Founder/CEO of the Southern Public Defender Training Center (SPDTC). The Southern Public Defender Training Center provides training to new public defenders throughout the South. Its mission to inspire, mobilize and train legal professionals to provide the highest quality defense representation to people unable to afford an attorney. From 11:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m., Mr. Rapping will talk about the culture of neglect that permeates the criminal justice system as it applies to poor people in this country and importance of building a generation of public defenders to reform that culture. From 12:30-1:30 p.m. he will talk about his life in the law. Students may attend one or both sessions. Lunch and refreshments will be served. The Law Academy is held annually in conjunction with and sponsored by the Law School Admission Council’s (LSAC) for DiscoverLaw.org Month.

The Law Academy is designed to introduce historically underrepresented minority groups and socio-economically disadvantaged high school students the legal profession and higher education in general.

The high school students will partake in a mock class taught by a UT Law faculty member, a mock trial presented by current UT Law students, lunch, and a video produced by the Texas Young Lawyers Association.

The conference will capitalize on the performance of Black Watch at the University of Texas, an award-winning play written by Scottish playwright Gregory Burke and performed by the National Theater of Scotland. The play explores the experiences of Scottish soldiers deployed to fight in Iraq from the Black Watch regiment, one of the oldest regiments in British history. “Aftershocks” will explore some of the same intersections of violence, the colonial past, memory, and trauma that Black Watch invokes, as well as the unique role that performance might play in the analysis. It will consider these issues in a variety of geographic spaces and places, with a special emphasis on the legal and political regimes that are meant to preserve memory while also transitioning into post-conflict.
