Jose Maria Abascal, a prominent arbitrator and arbitration specialist from Mexico City, will give a lunch-time talk covering international arbitration issues in Latin America. Señor Abascal has a fascinating background, having served as a court member of the LCIA for a number of years, and he has been intimately involved in drafting amendments to Uncitral’s model law on international arbitration. The Human Rights and the Arts Working Group at the Rapoport Center for Human Rights and Justice invites you to attend a screening of the film "Nostalgia de la Luz"! The screening will take place on Monday, March 7 at 3:30pm.

A discussion on human rights and their portrayal in film will follow, featuring Prof. Carcamo-Huechante (Department of Spanish and Portuguese), Prof. Zipporah Wiseman (School of Law), and Dr. Lucas Lixinski (Rapoport Center for Human Rights and Justice).

Among many intersecting themes, the film sheds light on several Chilean women’s search for their relatives, victims of “enforced disappearance” during Augusto Pinochet’s reign. The film, written and directed by Patricio Guzmán, was featured in the 2010 Cannes Film Festival, with the following synopsis:

“In Chile, at three thousand metres altitude, astronomers from all over the world gather together in the Atacama desert to observe the stars. The desert sky is so translucent that it allows them to see right to the boundaries of the universe.

It is also a place where the harsh heat of the sun keeps human remains intact: those of the mummies, explorers and miners. But also the remains of the dictatorship's political prisoners.

Whilst the astronomers examine the most distant galaxies in search of probable extraterrestrial life, at the foot of the observatories a group of women are digging through the desert soil in search of their disappeared relatives…”

Senator Rodney Ellis was elected to the Texas Senate in 1990. He has passed over 500 pieces of legislation including the TEXAS Grant program, which has disbursed $1.8 billion in tuition dollars and fees to over 207,000 students. Senator Ellis is a leader in economic development, education, civil rights, responsible environmental policy, tax cuts for the middle class, criminal justice, and workforce development issues. On March 9th the senator will be discussing the 82nd Legislative Session in the Auditorium at 2:00.

The session began Tuesday, January 11th and will conclude May 30th. Governor Rick Perry designated two emergency issues for the session: 1) abolishing sanctuary cities in Texas, and 2) protecting private property rights in eminent domain cases. Come hear Senator Rodney Ellis talk about this already controversial legislative session.

The Court Access Program is a consortium of legal and social service providers designed to assess whether civil and criminal courts in Travis County are adequately meeting the needs of families who experience domestic violence. The Court Access Program will collect data that will be used to improve the legal process for survivors of domestic violence. The Court Access Program is currently recruiting law student volunteers to attend protective order hearings to collect data, paying particular attention to treatment of litigants and the outcomes of hearings. The Court Access Program, through the UT Law Pro Bono Program, is seeking students who can monitor Travis County courts during the weeks from March 21 through April 15. Court monitoring sessions will take place from 8am-12pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Students are asked to commit to at least one two-hour shift on either a Tuesday or Thursday between 8am-12pm. Students may volunteer for as many sessions as their schedule allows. There will be a two-hour training at the Law School for interested students on this Thursday, March 10th, at 5pm. We will provide pizza for participants. Students who wish to attend the training should email Elena Yujuico at eyujuico@law.utexas.edu, and should include their availability for either a Tuesday or Thursday court watch session(s) between March 21 through April 15.
