Jorge Enrique Taiana, Former Foreign Minister of Argentina, will speak about what it means to be a victim of torture and imprisonment, then to become a human rights activist, and then to become part of the government.

Ambassador Ronald K. McMullen, Diplomat in Residence at the LBJ School of Public Affairs, will speak about foreign service career opportunities, including those with the U.S. Department of State. This will be an informal event with a chance for you to ask your own questions on the topic. The State Department offers nearly 900 internships each summer, both in Washington and abroad. To qualify, applicants must be U.S. citizens and plan to be enrolled in the semester following their internship, i.e., in the Fall 2013 semester. All are welcomed to apply, including speakers of hard languages, veterans, people with disabilities, ethnic minorities, first-generation college students, women, and individuals who have overcome significant obstacles to get where they are. Sign up to meet with the Ambassador McMullen: Students interested in meeting with Ambassador Robert McMullen one-on-one to discuss opportunities at the U.S. Department of State after his presentation can sign up for a 10-minute meeting. The Central Intelligence Agency will be conducting an informational session on Thursday, September 8, and interviewing candidates on Friday, September 9, at the LBJ School. The focus is on postgraduate jobs, but they can provide information on internships.

The American Bar Association Section of Taxation is pleased to announce that the application period for its Public Service Fellowship program for 2012-14 is now open. Come learn more about the fellowship application process. Lunch will be served and is sponsored by the ABA Section on Taxation.

Applications must be received by November 1, 2011 to be considered. Applicants selected for interviews will be invited to attend the Section’s meeting in on February 16-18, 2012, and asked to participate in interviews on February 18, 2012. The Section will award up to two Fellowships for 2011-13 to recent law school graduates or judicial clerks. Both LLM and JD candidates are eligible to apply. The proposed employment must involve taxation or administration of tax law and must be with a public-interest, non-profit section 501(c)(3) organization (the “Sponsoring Organization”).
