What does 'for the general welfare' mean today? Professor Forbath will be tackling this question during a live, nationwide webinar as part of the American Constitution Society's series on constitutional interpretation. Focusing on economic and social rights, he will discuss a reform-minded, distributive tradition of constitutional law and politics.

After the national address, Professor Forbath will continue the discussion with those students and faculty in attendance. Tiff's Treats and other refreshments will be provided.

Join students and law schools across the country in a live streaming-video conversation with Attorney General Eric Holder about what can be done to increase access to justice. This online video conversation or “watch party” will also feature public service champions who are being honored by the White House. The event aims to encourage law students to think of new ways to use their degrees to help secure basic rights for all Americans. Students may submit questions to Attorney General Holder and/or the public service champions via email during the event. Law schools across the nation will participate in the conversation, to be held on Thursday, October 13, from 1:00 p.m. - 2:30 pm CST. ABOUT THE MOVIE: Like drawing back a curtain to let bright light stream in, Miss Representation uncovers a glaring reality we live with every day but fail to see. Directed by Jennifer Siebel Newsom, the film explores how mainstream media contribute to the under-representation of women in influential positions in America and challenges the media's limiting and often disparaging portrayals of women, which make it difficult for the average girl to see herself as powerful. Equality Texas, the principal organization that lobbies the Texas Legislature on LGBTQ issues, will be at the Law School to give students a Legislative Update on developments during the 82nd Texas Legislative Session, which concluded this summer. Dennis Coleman, Equality Texas’ executive director, will speak to students about successes for LGBTQ interests during the last Session and agenda items that still need to be addressed next session. For aspiring policy wonks, Mr. Coleman will also talk about the lobbying process in Texas. Issues to be discussed include: public school bullying and cyber bullying prohibiting employment discrimination based on sexual orientation; same-sex parents’ names appearing on adopted child’s birth certificate; removing homosexual conduct from the Texas Penal Code; adding gender identity or expression to Texas hate crimes law; and repealing Texas’ constitutional ban on same-sex marriage.

A night of poker and prizes at Buffalo Billiards, to benefit survivors of domestic violence in the Austin area. Event includes a poker tournament and a raffle that continues throughout the night. Doors open at 9pm, the tournament begins at 10pm, and the night concludes at 2am.

The William Wayne Justice Center for Public Interest Law is pleased to be a co-sponsor of an upcoming conference “Housing + Transit: Connecting Affordable Homes to Transit-Oriented Development in the Austin Region.” The conference will highlight four nationally recognized programs – Minneapolis, Atlanta, Denver, and Salt Lake City -- along with a local response panel that will include Austin Mayor Leffingwell and Mike Martinez, Austin City Council Member and chair of the Capital Metro board.
