Please join us for a screening of the award-winning documentary, MISS REPRESENTATION, for the UT Community at the Student Activity Center on October 19. We will gather at 6 pm for a brief reception (light food to be provided), followed by the moving screening at 6:30, and a brief discussion after the movie with UT professors.

ABOUT THE MOVIE: Like drawing back a curtain to let bright light stream in, Miss Representation uncovers a glaring reality we live with every day but fail to see. Directed by Jennifer Siebel Newsom, the film explores how mainstream media contribute to the under-representation of women in influential positions in America and challenges the media's limiting and often disparaging portrayals of women, which make it difficult for the average girl to see herself as powerful. In a society where media is the most persuasive force shaping cultural norms, the collective message that our young women and men overwhelmingly receive is that a woman's value and power lie in her youth, beauty, and sexuality—and not in her capacity as a leader. While women have made strides in leadership over the past few decades, the United States still ranks 90th in the world for women in national legislatures, depression rates have doubled among teenage girls, and cosmetic surgery on minors has more than tripled in the last ten years. Stories from teenage girls and provocative interviews with politicians, journalists, academics, and activists like Condoleezza Rice, Nancy Pelosi, Katie Couric, Rachel Maddow, Margaret Cho, Rosario Dawson and Gloria Steinem build momentum as Miss Representation accumulates startling facts and statistics that will leave the audience shaken and armed with a new perspective.

Equality Texas, the principal organization that lobbies the Texas Legislature on LGBTQ issues, will be at the Law School to give students a Legislative Update on developments during the 82nd Texas Legislative Session, which concluded this summer. Dennis Coleman, Equality Texas’ executive director, will speak to students about successes for LGBTQ interests during the last Session and agenda items that still need to be addressed next session. For aspiring policy wonks, Mr. Coleman will also talk about the lobbying process in Texas. Issues to be discussed include: public school bullying and cyber bullying prohibiting employment discrimination based on sexual orientation; same-sex parents’ names appearing on adopted child’s birth certificate; removing homosexual conduct from the Texas Penal Code; adding gender identity or expression to Texas hate crimes law; and repealing Texas’ constitutional ban on same-sex marriage.

In recognition of National Pro Bono Week (October 23-29) and Domestic Violence Awareness Month, the UT Law Pro Bono Program has organized a special screening for the law school community of the award-winning documentary film Crime After Crime.

The event will take place on Thursday, October 27, 2011 at the Violet Crown Theater in downtown Austin. Attendees will gather in the Violet Crown lounge at 6:30 pm for a brief reception (popcorn provided, cash bar), followed by the movie screening at 7 pm and closing remarks after the movie.
