The West Coast International LL.M. Job Fair is a recruitment venue for employers who are interested in enlisting international legal talents and for internationally trained lawyers who are currently enrolled in an LL.M. program at a participating law school. UCLA School of Law serves as the event's organizer and host while a consortium of 19 campuses participate in the program. Interested employers will have the opportunity to pre-select LL.M. candidates from a collective pool of high caliber students who represent many countries in Africa, Asia, Europe, Latin America and the Middle East. The 2012 West Coast International LL.M. Job Fair will be held on February 24 at UCLA School of Law.

“Lives in the Law,” Karen Lash, Senior Counsel for Access to Justice, U.S. Department of Justice, Nov. 7, ’11, 11:30 am – 1:30 pm, Sheffield Room, co-sponsored with the Career Services Office

Lash will speak from 11:30 to 12:30 about the Obama Administration’s Access to Justice Initiative and her work at the federal level to close the justice gap. From 12:30 to 1:30 Lash will speak about her life in the law and offer tips for students considering public service careers. Lunch will be served at 11:30 and 12:30. Audience members may attend one or both sessions.

Professors speak to students in an informal setting about their personal research – what interests them, what they’ve learned, how they do it. Get an inside look into legal scholarship and a chance to interact with professors outside of the classroom.

Our next speaker is Professor Linda Mullenix, who specializes in Federal Civil Procedure, mass tort litigation, and class actions. Professor Mullenix will discuss her research on remediating victims of mass disaster, including 9/11 and the BP Gulf Oil Spill. Join us on Wednesday, November 9 at 3:30 pm in the Sheffield Room. This event will feature a presentation by award-winning Professor Carol Sanger of Columbia Law School. She will lead a conversation about what's at stake with mandatory ultrasound laws for women seeking abortions, and address the concept of "visualization of the fetus."

Responding will be: TX State Representative Donna Howard, Blake Rocap, NARAL Lobbyist, and UT Professor Gretchen Ritter, Vice Provost and Director of the Center for Women's and Gender Studies.

The event will be followed by a reception at UT’s George’s Café where you will have the opportunity to meet and talk with our presenters more informally. The University of Texas School of Law will host an event that will bring nationally renowned experts on capital markets, securities markets, and economics to Austin.

On Friday, November 11, 2011, UT Law will host the Massey Prize Symposium, an event that will honor Robert E. Litan, the inaugural recipient of the $50,000 Massey Prize for Research in Law, Innovation, and Capital Markets. The Symposium is free and open to the public.

The event runs from 10:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and features:

New York Times senior financial writer Diana Henriques, author of The Wizard of Lies: Bernie Madoff and the Death of Trust, who will give the keynote on “Mixed Signals: Madoff, the Meltdown, and the Media”

Charles R. Plott, professor of economics and political science at the California Institute of Technology, who will discuss how to understand the way capital markets actually function in a talk entitled “Economics Experiments and Securities Markets”

Massey Prize recipient Robert Litan, who will discuss the impact of the 2010 Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act, which was designed to more closely regulate the banking industry, in a talk entitled “The Political Economy of Dodd-Frank: A Look Ahead”

A roundtable discussion on the “Regulation of Financial Markets” moderated by Thomas W. Gilligan, the dean of the McCombs School of Business. Henriques, Litan, and Plott, will be joined by Paul Atkins, a former Securities and Exchange commissioner; and Edward S. Knight, executive vice president, general counsel, and chief regulatory officer of NASDAQ.

Dr. Litan is the vice president for research and policy at the Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation in Kansas City, Missouri, where he oversees the Foundation’s extensive program for funding data collection and research relating to entrepreneurship and economic growth. He is also a senior fellow in economic studies at the Brookings Institution, where he was previously vice president. His book, Good Capitalism, Bad Capitalism, and the Economics of Growth and Prosperity (coauthored with Kauffman Foundation President Carl Schramm and New York University Professor William Baumol) has been translated into ten languages and is used as a college text around the world.

The event will be held at the University of Texas School of Law, 727 East Dean Keeton Street, Austin, Texas. Morning events will be held in the Francis Auditorium (Townes Hall, 2.114); afternoon events will be held in the Eidman Courtroom (Connally Center, 2.306).

A practice question will be administered under testing conditions to all 1L sections. 1Ls who are typing exams should use this time to practice with the exam software (Extegrity). All students can use this valuable experience to help guide their study practices for exams.

Dean Sager has generously agreed to sponsor airfare, hotel and program registration for four UT Law students to attend the American Bar Association's Judicial Clerkship Program "Judges and Law Students: Building Relationships that Work," which will occur during the 2012 ABA Midyear Meeting in New Orleans, LA on February 2-4, 2012. This program is designed to increase diversity in the judiciary and is an excellent opportunity for students who may be considering judicial clerkships to learn about what it is like to be a judicial clerk. Programming will begin at 11:15 a.m. on Thursday, February 2, and will conclude at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, February 4. The law school will pay hotel accommodations for two nights (February 2-3).

1Ls and 2Ls are eligible to apply, as long as you have not already secured a judicial clerkship and have not previously attended this conference. Because this program is designed to encourage diversity in the judiciary, students should demonstrate a knowledge of or involvement in racial and ethnic minority communities.

The ABA's Judicial Clerkship Program gives students the opportunity to network with judges and former law clerks from across the country. The program simulates the clerkship experience, exposes students to what judicial clerks do on a daily basis, broadens your career options, shows how to apply for a judicial clerkship, and demonstrates the benefits of clerking. Students will have the opportunity to interact with federal and state judges in a series of panels and small group discussions as well as at scheduled social events. This program is a great way to make important connections that can lead to a clerkship after graduation. You can learn more by reading the brochure from last year's ABA Judicial Clerkship Program.
