    "After 'Don't Ask, Don't Tell

On September 20, 2011, the Pentagon officially certified repeal of the U.S. military's 17-year-old "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" policy (DADT), which barred openly gay, lesbian, or bisexual persons from active military service. Servicemembers Legal Defense Network (SLDN), an organization dedicated to bringing about full LGBT equality within the military, has provided free and direct legal assistance to more than 10,000 servicemembers affected by discrimination or harassment based on sexual orientation or gender identity. Danny Hernandez, SLDN Communications and Development Assistant will speak about outstanding legal issues still impacting LGBTQ servicemembers after DADT's repeal.

Questions to be discussed may include: - What nondiscrimination and harassment protections exist for out servicemembers? - In states that allow same-sex marriage, do any protections, services, or support for same-sex spouses exist? - What obstacles exist for gay and lesbian veterans discharged under DADT to return to the military? - If a servicemember was dishonorably discharged under DADT, may they upgrade their discharge paperwork after repeal? - What about open transgender service after DADT's repeal?

Tuesday, November 22, 2011 12:30 - 1:30 p.m. University of Texas School of Law (street map: http://g.co/maps/4v8wa) Charles I. Francis Auditorium, room 2.114 (building map: http://www.utexas.edu/law/about/maps/) Free food will be provided.
