Hosted annually by the UT Law Career Services Office, Public Service Career Day (PSCD) is the largest public service job fair for law students in Texas. During both days of PSCD, which will be held February 3-4, 2011, public interest and government employers will conduct on-campus interviews for paid and unpaid summer and permanent positions in the Career Services Interview Suite. On Thursday, February 3, certain employers will also host informational tables in the Law School's Susman Godfrey Atrium from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.

First, second, third-year and/or LL.M. students and alumni up to one year after graduation from all nine Texas law schools are eligible to participate in this program. You must register to use the Texas Consortium Symplicity Module, which is a different module than the UT Law Symplicity.

Tarlton Law Library will be hosting the Seventh Annual Rare Books Lecture February 3, 2011. Professor William Butler will be presenting a talk on the library of American Philosophical Society founder, Peter Stephen Du Ponceau. 2010 represented the 250 anniversary of the death of this fascinating lawyer and linguist. The Law Academy is held annually in conjunction with and sponsored by the Law School Admission Council’s (LSAC) for DiscoverLaw.org Month.

The Law Academy is designed to introduce historically underrepresented minority groups and socio-economically disadvantaged high school students the legal profession and higher education in general.

The high school students will partake in a mock class taught by a UT Law faculty member, a mock trial presented by current UT Law students, lunch, and a video produced by the Texas Young Lawyers Association.

This spring the Rapoport Center will host our seventh annual conference, entitled “Aftershocks: Legacies of Conflict” on February 17—18. The conference will capitalize on the performance of Black Watch at the University of Texas, an award-winning play written by Scottish playwright Gregory Burke and performed by the National Theater of Scotland. The play explores the experiences of Scottish soldiers deployed to fight in Iraq from the Black Watch regiment, one of the oldest regiments in British history. “Aftershocks” will explore some of the same intersections of violence, the colonial past, memory, and trauma that Black Watch invokes, as well as the unique role that performance might play in the analysis. It will consider these issues in a variety of geographic spaces and places, with a special emphasis on the legal and political regimes that are meant to preserve memory while also transitioning into post-conflict. Author Dorothy Budd talks about her book "Tested: How Twelve Wrongly Imprisoned Men Held Onto Hope" with exoneree Christopher Scott.

About the book: “Tested: How Twelve Wrongly Imprisoned Men Held onto Hope,” by Dorothy Budd and Peyton Budd, explores the lives and stories of twelve men who were wrongly convicted in Dallas County. All the men spent time in prison before the new evidence helped win their release. The book is based on the exonerated men’s personal journeys of hope, forgiveness and redemption as told to the authors in one-on-one interviews.

About the event: Join author Dorothy Budd and Christopher Scott, one of the men profiled in “Tested,” in a discussion Scott’s story and the implications of wrongful convictions. Tiffany Dowling of the Law School’s Actual Innocence Clinic will moderate.

Renowned attorney, author and professor Lawrence Lessig will give the keynote address "The 'Corruption' of Our System of Money and Politics" at an event hosted at The University of Texas at Austin on Monday, Feb. 28.

The event, which includes a panel discussion after Lessig's presentation, takes place from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Thompson Conference Center. The talk is free and open to university students and faculty with an ID and the public, but seating is limited.

Law School Dean Lawrence Sager will introduce Lessig, a Harvard University law professor who is the founder and chairman of the board of FixCongressFirst and director of the Edmond J. Safra Foundation Center for Ethics at Harvard.

For much of his academic career, Lessig has focused on law and technology, especially as it affects copyright. He is the author of five books on the subject and has served as lead counsel in a number of important cases marking the boundaries of copyright law in a digital age.

His work on institutional corruption (relationships that are legal, even ethical, but that weaken public trust in institutions) led to his founding of Change Congress (now FixCongressFirst) where he champions the necessity of democratic citizenship.

Lessig's presentation will be followed by a panel discussion "Are Our Elected Officials for Sale: If So, What Can Be Done?" featuring Lessig; Steve Bickerstaff, adjunct professor at the School of Law; Sherri Greenberg, interim director of the LBJ School's Center for Politics and Governance; Mark McKinnon, political strategist, media consultant and a founder of No Labels; and Brian Roberts, a University of Texas at Austin government professor. Harvey Kronberg, a political analyst and editor of the Quorum Report, will moderate the panel.
