    Webinar: Abortion Laws Worldwide

Please join your fellow LSRJ members for an interactive webinar with the Center for Reproductive Rights to learn more about abortion law reform movements globally, and the Center’s work in securing women’s access to safe abortion services in both law and practice, straight from the attorneys working on the cases.

Since 1998, the Center for Reproductive Rights has produced The World's Abortion Laws map which visually compares the legal status of induced abortion in different countries and is a tool to advocate for greater progress in ensuring access to safe and legal abortion services for all women worldwide. The legal status of abortion is an important indicator of women's ability to enjoy their reproductive rights, and legal restrictions on abortion often cause high levels of illegal and unsafe abortion. There is a proven link between unsafe abortion and maternal mortality.

Since 1994, when 179 governments signed the International Conference on Population and Development Programme of Action, signaling their commitment to prevent unsafe abortion, more than 25 countries worldwide have liberalized their abortion laws, while only a handful have tightened legal restrictions on abortion. However, despite the positive trend toward liberalized abortion laws globally, gaps in the implementation of abortion laws, or procedural barriers placed in the way of abortion services, may render services in some countries inaccessible in practice.

This webinar will highlight recent trends and cases and will also introduce the new interactive component of The World's Abortion Laws map, which makes the abortion laws of key countries easily available online. This also provides links to helpful advocacy tools for abortion law reform and links to more information on the Center's work around the world.
