    The Legacy of the Dirty 30

    The Bernard and Audre Rapoport Center for Human Rights and Justice, The Texas Observer, and the Dolph Briscoe Center for American History will host a panel discussion entitled “The Legacy of the Dirty Thirty.” The panel will explore a pivotal period in Texas politics in the early ’70s when a group of lawmakers, known as the Dirty Thirty, challenged the influence of special interest in the Legislature and the power of House leadership.

    Panelists will be Sissy Farenthold, Dirty Thirty member and former gubernatorial candidate; Tom Bass, Dirty Thirty member and former Harris County commissioner; Terry O’Rourke, legal strategist, Dirty Thirty; Ronnie Dugger, founding editor of The Texas Observer. The moderator will be State Rep. Ana Hernandez Luna of Houston.

    Jul 2013 TX Bar Exam App Final Deadline

    Reminder for 3Ls planning to sit for the Texas July 2013 Bar Exam: in order to sit for the exam, your In-State Application to Take the TX Bar Exam must be post-marked by March 30. This deadline is strictly enforced.

    Applicants who have not yet filed their Declaration of Intention to Study Law must do so prior to or with their In-State Application.

    The TX BLE is not open on weekends. If you would like to hand deliver your completed application by the preceding Friday, their office is located at:

    Jason is an alumnus of The University of Texas School of Law and an appellate lawyer who regularly speaks about cases and issues before the U.S. Supreme Court. He is co-counsel in the same-sex divorce cases currently pending before the Texas Supreme Court, and later this year he will argue a prisoner's Eighth Amendment appeal before the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals.

    Closing the Educational Achievement Gap

    Building on the Justice Center’s education-directed pro bono initiatives and law students’ interest in education reform, the conference will focus on the law as a tool to close the educational achievement gap, with a special focus on Texas. Closing the achievement gap requires a multi-faceted approach that addresses issues at the community, school, and policy levels. This conference, aimed at education reformers, lawyers, educators, policy makers, scholars, and students, will explore ongoing efforts to close the achievement gap as well as possible future initiatives. Morning panels will address education reform efforts through government and legislative action and litigation. The lunchtime keynote will be followed by an afternoon panel for students and young lawyers on building a legal career focused on addressing the achievement gap. The conference will conclude with an informal reception.
