The UT Opportunity Forum is pleased to announce an upcoming discussion with education experts on the unresolved issue of school finance in Texas. The event is presented by UT Opportunity Forum, The Texas Tribune, and the Center for Politics and Governance at the LBJ School of Public Affairs.

Panelists include:

Florence Shapiro, a former public school teacher, Plano city councilwoman and mayor first elected to represent Senate District 8 in 1993. In the Senate, she served as chairwoman of the Public Education Committee for 10 years. She passed legislation affecting the state's school finance system in the areas of property taxes, funding and teacher pay and established the incentive-pay program. She has also focused her efforts on educational reform at the high school level that promotes college readiness and supports better accountability standards for schools.

Scott Hochberg, a former state representative and current lecturer at Rice University. He was first elected to represent southwest Houston in 1993 and served in the Texas House for 20 years. He currently teaches a course at Rice University on education policy, drawing from his experience serving 10 terms on the House Public Education Committee and three terms as chairman of the House Appropriations Subcommittee on Education.

David Thompson, a partner at Thompson & Horton, LLC. He represents public school districts, junior colleges and other educational entities in the Gulf Coast area and across Texas. Thompson serves as legislative counsel for the Texas Association of School Administrators, the Fast Growth School Coalition, the Houston Independent School District, other school districts and education organizations, and has been actively involved in most legislative activities affecting public education in the past 20 years.

Kent Grusendorf, executive director of Texans for Real Efficiency and Equity in Education. He is a former member of the State Board of Education and served in the Texas House from 1987 to 2007. While in the House, he served as chairman of the House Education Committee during the last public school finance debate.

This very timely event will feature a candid conversation between Anne-Marie Slaughter, author of last summer’s controversial article, “Why Women Still Can’t Have It All” (The Atlantic, July/August 2012) and Deborah Epstein Henry, consultant and author of Law & Reorder: Legal Industry Solutions for Restructure, Retention, Promotion and Work/Life Balance (ABA, 2010).

TOPIC: INSPIRING WOMEN . . . . With the future of the legal profession uncertain and law students graduating with fewer jobs to fill, the questions of how, whether, when and if you can have a career and a family is more important than ever. This webcast will feature Anne-Marie Slaughter in a one-on-one interview and explore the challenges that arise when women pursue power in the workplace and have family responsibilities at home or other significant commitments outside the office. Attendees will leave the program armed with individual action steps they can take, as well as steps for their employers, that enable women to aspire and thrive - inside the office and out. DISTINGUISHED GUEST: ANNE-MARIE SLAUGHTER is the Bert G. Kerstetter '66 University Professor of Politics and International Affairs at Princeton University. From 2009–2011, she served as Director of Policy Planning for the United States Department of State. Upon leaving the State Department, she received the Secretary's Distinguished Service Award as well as a Meritorious Honor Award and a Joint Civilian Service Commendation Award. Prior to her government service, Dr. Slaughter was the Dean of Princeton's Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs. She is a frequent contributor to both mainstream and new media, publishing op-eds around the world and curating foreign policy news for over 40,000 followers on Twitter. Dr. Slaughter is the author of “Why Women Still Can't Have it All”, the most read article in The Atlantic's history of online publication. She appears regularly on CNN, the BBC, NPR, and PBS, among others, and lectures widely. She received a B.A. from Princeton, an M.Phil and D.Phil in international relations from Oxford, where she was a Daniel M. Sachs Scholar, and a J.D. from Harvard. Effective September 1, Dr. Slaughter will become President of the New America Foundation and she will transition to emeritus status at Princeton. She is married to Professor Andrew Moravcsik; they live in Princeton with their two sons.

INTERVIEWER: DEBORAH EPSTEIN HENRY is an expert and consultant on workplace restructuring, talent management, work/life balance, and retaining and promoting female lawyers. The annual symposium, hosted by the Center for Public Policy Dispute Resolution at the UT School of Law, is a showcase for student presentations as well as a professional presentation on topics relevant to dispute resolution. The student presentations culminate the requirements for completing the graduate portfolio program. The professional presentation, How to Keep Disputes from Derailing Long-Term Contracts, will provide insights into Dispute Resolution Boards (DRBs). The esteemed panel includes Bill Hinton with the DRB Foundation and Jeri Arbuckle with DART and will be moderated by Jeff Jury and Steve Nelson, experienced ADR practitioners.
