Counsel to the President Kathy Ruemmler

Counsel to the President, Kathy Ruemmler, has had quite the career. From being the only woman (aside from jurors) in the Enron courtroom to partnership at Latham & Watkins LLP to advising President Obama, Kathy has done everything by being true to herself and her own leadership style. She has been called a Super Lawyer, Superstar, and among the 25 People who Shaped the Business World in 2006 by Forbes. Now, she is offering her advice to the Ms. JD community.

As part of Ms. JD's national programming series, Kathy will spend an hour on September 24, 2013 answering your questions about law, leadership, government, and how to be a successful woman in all of those fields. Questions must be submitted in advance via Twitter (@msjdtweets) using the hashtag #SheLeads, or on Ms. JD’s Facebook page. All questions must be submitted by Wednesday, September 18th.

The event, which is hosted by Latham & Watkins LLP, will be held live at Latham & Watkins LLP’s Washington, DC office and broadcast for viewing parties to the following locations: Boston, Chicago, Dallas, Houston, Austin, Los Angeles, New York, Orange County, San Diego, San Francisco, and Silicon Valley.

Ms. JD's National Programming Series brings one luminary each quarter to inspire our community. Kathy Ruemmler is the perfect fit. When naming her as Counsel to the President, President Obama described Ruemmler as, "an outstanding lawyer with impeccable judgment.” Before becoming Counsel to the President, Ruemmler served as Principal Deputy Counsel to the President. Ruemmler joined the Obama Administration in January of 2009 as the Principal Associate Deputy Attorney General at the United States Department of Justice.

Ruemmler was a litigation partner in the Washington, D.C. office of Latham & Watkins from 2007 to 2009. Prior to Latham, Ruemmler served as a federal prosecutor for six years, where she was a co-lead prosecutor in the successful prosecution of the former CEOs of Enron. Ruemmler received the Attorney General’s Award for Exceptional Service for her work on the Enron investigation.

From 2000 to 2001, Ruemmler served as Associate Counsel to President Bill Clinton. Ruemmler received her J.D. from Georgetown University Law Center where she was Editor-in-Chief of the Georgetown Law Journal, and her B.A. cum laude with distinction in English from the University of Washington. She clerked for the Honorable Timothy K. Lewis on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit.

These conferences are an opportunity to connect law students, health advocates, nurses, doctors, social workers, and other reproductive justice-minded individuals in the same region. The all-day conference will have panels from a variety of speakers. This year, the University of Texas School of Law has been selected to host the Southern Regional Conference.
