    Townes Hall Morning Coffee

    On Monday, February 1, the Texas Law Alumni Association is pleased to announce that it will kick off its Spring 2016 Townes Hall Morning Coffee for all students every Monday morning. Please bring your favorite travel mug from home (we are “going green,” so no paper products will be provided) and enjoy FREE coffee every Monday morning to start off your week on behalf of the Alumni Association. Coffee will be located at one, large station located near the 1L Classrooms (by TNH 2.140, TNH 2.139, etc.) beginning at 8:45 am.

    FBI v. Apple

    TX FedSoc & the Strauss Center have partned to host a debate on FBI v. Apple. Professor Chesney will moderate the debate, which will cover a range of topics from encrpytion to national security.

    The debate will feature:

    Susan Hennessey (pro-FBI) - Susan is the Managing Editor for the national security blog LawFare. She recevied her J.D. from Harvard Law and previously worked as an attorney in the Office of General Counsel for the NSA.     Julian Sanchez (pro-Apple) - Julian is a Senior Fellow at the Cato Institute. He studies and writes on technology, privacy, and civil liberties, with a focus on intelligence surveillance. He has written on privacy for a variey of publications, including the National Review. He is the founding editor of the policy blog, Just Security.

    The Beck Awards honor our Teaching Quizmasters (teaching assistants in legal-writing courses) for one year and two years of service, student winners of the Legal Research Board’s best-memo competition, students who competed in interscholastic moot court, and volunteer coaches for interscholastic moot court.

    Global Struggles, Local Battlegrounds

    This panel will discuss how human rights are codified at the local and state level in Texas. It will begin with a discussion of human rights and civil rights, and how the two intersect. Panelists will discuss recent efforts to advance LGBT and women’s rights in Texas, the challenges faced, and how these local efforts interact with and compare to national civil rights and international human rights movements. Confirmed speakers include Representative Celia Israel, pro-choice policy advocate Aimee Arrambide, and Professor Ariel Dulitzky. The event is co-sponsored by the Feminist Policy Alliance and Harvey Milk Society, both at the LBJ School of Public Affairs, and the Rapoport Center.
