    Natural Resources, Rights and Inequality

The Colloquium on Natural Resource Governance, Inequality & Human Rights will address the human rights issues that arise in the context of natural resource extraction and governance, especially in relation to resources such as fossil fuels, minerals and timbers. Natural resource governance is fundamentally about who can decide which resources can be used by whom and about how decision-making around these questions should be undertaken. The outcomes of such decision-making have profound consequences for the distribution of wealth, power, authority and risk exposure at the local, national and international levels. Lectures will examine how persistent inequalities between and within countries pose additional challenges for the realization of human rights in relation to natural resource extraction.

    Networking Reception

The goal of the event is to connect TMLS members with successful black lawyers and business personnel in the Austin area so that potential mentor-mentee relationships can be formed. This will be especially beneficial to 1Ls who hear a lot about the importance of networking from the CSO but are not necessarily put in settings that allow for a real connection to form. This will be different from the many law firm receptions that students are told to attend because the students will not be getting vetted for a job, and will hopefully be more themselves. This event will also allow students who are interested in in-house or consulting work to meet business professionals who may be able to advise them on that path. Similarly, many members of the Black Lawyers Assoc. are in the government sector, and this will provide an opportunity to interact with a larger number of attorneys in that field than do many CSO events.

    Meet Luke Watson, Third Way

SIGN UP IN THE CSO. Luke Watson, Deputy Director of Strategy and Leadership Development, will be available for 30-minute, one-on-one meetings to discuss opportunities with Third Way.

To sign-up for an individual meeting, please stop by the CSO in TNH 3.130 or contact the CSO at 512-232-1150.

3Ls: the Third Way Fellows Program is a full-time, 12-month program that comes with a $50,000 annual stipend, two weeks paid vacation, and benefits. But it also comes with the opportunity to meet with top Washington policy players; to co-author papers and produce new ideas, research, and insights; to learn our methodology; and to leverage our wide-ranging DC network into future career opportunities.

Every September our four policy programs welcome a new Fellow for the year – during that time, the Fellows take on projects and produce papers and reports with guidance from the program vice presidents. They interact with policy and decision-makers, thinkers and talkers. They are published in major print and online periodicals. They take advantage of Third Way’s ever-growing network of public policy professionals and go on to find fulfilling work at other think tanks, congressional committees, private-sector firms, advocacy organizations, and the federal government.

During your time at Third Way you will learn skills in:

∙ Workflow Management ∙ Leveraging Polarities ∙ Meeting Facilitation and Participation ∙ Parallel Thinking ∙ Dynamic Presentation and Communication ∙ Creativity ∙ Design Thinking ∙ Networking and interview skills

If you are an ideologically rebellious, fresh-thinking policy wonk willing to listen and learn, we’d like you to join us.

Apply by March 1, 2017, to start in September 2017.

If you have any questions, email fellowship@thirdway.org.

Texas School Finance: From SCOTX to the

In May 2016, the Supreme Court of Texas ruled that the state's school finance system met minimum state constitutional standards, rejecting a challenge from over half the state's school districts that contended otherwise. Despite calling for "transformational, top-to-bottom reforms," SCOTX decided that it was not the institution to initiate them. That decision punted the problems of Texas's school finance system to the Texas Legislature, where they will be a top priority in the session beginning in January 2017.

Join ACS for a discussion of one of the most important policy issues that Texas currently faces. Speakers: - Marisa Bono, lead counsel for the Mexican–American Legal Defense and Education Fund (MALDEF) in the school finance litigation; - Gina Hinojosa, Austin ISD Board President and candidate for Texas House District 49 in Central Austin. - Chandra Kling Villanueva, Policy Analyst at the Center for Public Policy Priorities focusing on school finance.

Pro Bono before the Supreme Court

Pro Bono before the Supreme Court: Ivy v. Morath and Deaf Access to Driver Education and Licensing

    Tuesday, October 25 11:45 am – 1 pm TNH 2.138

The U.S. Supreme Court currently is considering Ivy v. Morath, a case that challenges Texas’s failure to require providers of state-mandated driver education courses to make their programming accessible to the deaf. Individuals under age 25 cannot obtain a Texas driver’s license without completing a driver education course, so the lack of accessible driver education programming limits young deaf people’s ability to drive legally in Texas.

Pro bono lawyers played a lead role in bringing this case before the Court. In honor of the American Bar Association’s National Pro Bono Celebration, the Mithoff Pro Bono Program is hosting the following panelists for a lunch event on Ivy v. Morath:

    • Joe T. Sanders ’05, Partner, Sanders Bajwa, Pro Bono Counsel for Petitioners • Olga Kobzar ’10, Partner, Scott Douglass & McConnico, Pro Bono Counsel for Petitioners • Mimi Marziani, Executive Director, Texas Civil Rights Project, Counsel for Petitioners • Paul Genender, Partner, Weil Gotshal & Manges, Pro Bono Counsel for Law Professors as Amici Curiae in Ivy v. Morath • Donna Valverde-Hummel, Legislative Liaison and Advocate, Texas Association of the Deaf

Professor Lucy Wood, one of the law professors on the amicus brief filed by Weil Gotshal, will moderate.

Executive Director Stephen Wells and Senior Staff Attorney Matthew Liebman are taking to Facebook for a live, interactive discussion about Ag-Gag laws. These laws are designed to ‘gag’ would-be whistleblowers and undercover investigators by punishing them for recording and disseminating footage of what really goes on in animal agriculture. Join us to learn how the Animal Legal Defense Fund is fighting these laws and advocating for animals, and to ask your own questions about Ag-Gag laws.

Criminal History as a Barrier to Housing

The second installment of the Opportunity Forum's 2016-17 Lunch Series, Hot Topics in Access to Opportunity, focuses on criminal history as a barrier to housing access. Nearly one in three U.S. adults holds a criminal record. Accessing safe and affordable housing is an urgent need for many of these individuals, but a criminal background presents immense barriers to securing housing in the Austin region. Join us on October 28th to learn about innovative work going on in New Orleans and elsewhere to reduce these barriers and to increase housing access for individuals with criminal histories. We will also learn about new federal fair housing guidance regarding landlords' use of criminal records to screen tenants.

We will split the program into two rooms: women's attire will be discussed in TNH 2.139 and men's attire will be discussed in TNH 2.137.
