Hosted annually by the Texas Law Career Services Office, Public Service Career Fair (PSCF) is the largest public service job fair for law students in Texas. During both days of PSCF, which will be held January 31-February 1, 2019, public interest and government employers will conduct on-campus interviews for paid and unpaid summer and permanent positions in the Career Services Interview Suite and in various rooms around the law school.

On Friday, February 1, Heather Jarvis will be speaking about "Public Service Loan Forgiveness in Five Easy Steps" during lunch from noon-1:15 p.m. as part of the Public Service Career Fair. Many government and nonprofit professionals stand to gain tens of thousands of dollars of student debt relief from the Public Service Loan Forgiveness program established by the College Cost Reduction and Access Act. But the program requirements can be confusing. Heather knows how to break it down step-by-step so it makes sense once and for all. She'll also be discussing the Pay As You Earn Repayment Plan.

For our 2019 Symposium, Texas Hispanic Journal of Law & Policy will host a Latino Lunch Series every Tuesday of February with speakers discussing various legal and policy issues on the U.S.-Mexico border.

Border Zones I: Due Process on the Border

This panel will discuss the rights U.S. Citizens, undocumented immigrants, and visa holders have on the United States border as well as the rights Mexican citizens have on the Mexican side of the border. It will discuss the due process issues implicated in the border zone for all people and how these issues are different than outside the border zone. Finally, it will discuss the militarization of the border and the implications of having an outsized government presence. Speakers include Professor Elissa Steglich and Professor Michael Churgin.

On Tuesday, February 5, 2019, the Strauss Center for International Security and Law is pleased to present Shirin Sinnar, Associate Professor of Law and John A. Wilson Faculty Scholar at Stanford Law School, for a talk on "Political Violence in the Age of Trump." From Charlottesville to Pittsburgh, resurgent white nationalism and new acts of domestic terrorism have prompted calls for new laws to respond to political violence. Should there be new domestic terrorism laws? Are hate crimes laws a useful response to violence directed at victims’ identities? Professor Sinnar will address how the law should—and should not—adjust to evolving threats while protecting core values of liberty, equality, and accountability. This is part of the Brumley Speaker Series.

In 2011, the University of Texas School of Law established the Virgil C. Lott Medal to honor our first African American graduate. The medal is presented every other year at a gala dinner, and recipients are chosen by a distinguished committee headed by Dean Ward Farnsworth, former Dean Larry Sager, and previous winners. Dean Farnsworth describes the mission of the award and ceremony thusly: “Virgil C. Lott, ‘53 was the first African American graduate of The University of Texas School of Law. The Law School commissioned the Virgil C. Lott Medal to honor the memory of this pioneer and distinguished alumnus. This award honors men and women who, like Mr. Lott, have made significant contributions to the legal profession and to the improvement of understanding among all peoples.”

By this point in law school you’ve learned the foundations of black letter law. You’ve learned the foundations of legal research. You’ve learned the foundations of legal writing.

Maybe you came to law school after years of participating in speech and debate. Maybe you were active in student government or community organizing. Or maybe you’ve never done any public speaking at all. Whether you end up spending every day in the courtroom arguing to a judge or group of jurors, or in a boardroom advocating to a group of venture capitalists, a necessary part of our profession is public speaking.

You advocate every day already. You are advocating for yourself when you write cover letters. You advocate when you interview for summer clerkships. You are using advocacy when you present at your upcoming LRW oral argument and even when you write exams or answer questions in class.

ADVOCACY MATTERS.

If you didn’t already experience success as an advocate, you wouldn’t be in law school. The art of advocacy as a lawyer is an important part of your legal education, no matter where your career in law takes you.

The upcoming Workshop will offer you a chance to add more skills to your repertoire. Professors from the Advocacy Department at the University of Texas School of Law will offer two sessions for the 1L Public Speaking Workshop on Friday, February 8th and Friday, February 15th, 1:00 – 3:00 p.m. You will be taught by successful trial lawyers and talented National Mock Trial Champions; you will be taught by lawyers who are hired to teach experienced lawyers how to be even better.

You will be on your feet. You will be practicing voice and gestures. You will work on fluidity and rhythm and pace and cadence and tone. No matter what your skill level when you walked in the door, in two hours, you will be a better advocate than before. And if you show up at 12:30, we’ll even feed you lunch.

Stripped Away: Stories of Immigrant Children

This panel will discuss the issues immigrant children face while in state and federal custody. Taking a multidisciplinary approach, the discussion will include legal representation for immigrant children, conditions faced by children who are detained or placed in federally licensed unaccompanied refugee foster care programs, and the long term psychological impact and trauma of being separated from family for long periods of time. Border Zones II: This Land is Whose Land?

This panel will will discuss the complex legal, environmental and eminent domain issues present at Texas’ border zones. Many Texans have felt the impact of the border wall with land agents assessing the land between Texas and Mexico in the spring of 2007. The previous visits launched the most aggressive seizure of private land by the federal government in decades. What impact will the President’s talk of a border wall have on property owners? How will lawyers and scientists predict the environmental impact of a border wall? This panel will discuss the legal, property and environmental implications of a border wall in 2019. Speakers include Professor John Echeverria (Vermont Law School), Nick Laurent (Baron Adler), Roy Brandys (Baron Adler), Kiah Collier (Texas Tribune), and Professor Tim Keitt (UT).

During the first hour, which is free and open to the public, John Pollock will discuss his work to establish the right to counsel for low-income individuals in civil cases involving fundamental rights in a talk entitled “The Right to Counsel in Eviction Cases: Successes and the Potential in Texas.” During the second hour he will meet with students more informally over lunch to discuss his life and career.

John Pollock is a Staff Attorney for the Public Justice Center and serves as the Coordinator of the National Coalition for a Civil Right to Counsel. He focuses entirely on working to establish the right to counsel for low-income individuals in civil cases involving fundamental rights such as child custody, housing, and benefits. Previously, he served as the Enforcement Director for the Central Alabama Fair Housing Center (CAFHC) in Montgomery, Alabama, addressing systemic housing discrimination in rental, sales, lending, and insurance. He started his legal career at the Southern Poverty Law Center in Montgomery, Alabama, where he worked on immigrant civil rights violations by state and federal officers, involuntary land loss in minority communities, wage/hour violations by employers of migrant workers, predatory lending, and hate crimes. While at SPLC, he founded the Heirs' Property Retention Coalition, a network of dozens of organizations across the southeastern United States working on stopping the forced sales of ancestral property within low-income African-American communities. John drafted the first version of what eventually became the Uniform Partition of Heirs Property Act, a uniform law to reduce forced sales that was adopted by the ABA and the Uniform Law Commission in 2011. The Act has been adopted by the states of Nevada, Georgia, Montana, Alabama, and Arkansas, and has been introduced as legislation in several other states. He attended Wesleyan University and Northeastern University School of Law.

The “Lives in the Law” speaker series focuses on the work and lives of lawyers who strive to improve the lives of others through litigation, advocacy and public service.

The Texas Intellectual Property Law Journal is happy to announce that it will be hosting this year's Symposium on February 22nd, 2019. It will include speakers from academia, the judiciary, and both government and private practice. Our theme this year is the administrative state and its effect on intellectual property practice- a theme commented on by many, including the Supreme Court, in recent years. The Institute for Transnational Law invites you to a distinguished lecture by Rod E. Wetsel. The title of the lecture is “How to Negotiate and Draft a Wind Energy Lease with a Look at New Developments in Wind Law.” Wetsel will talk about both wind leases and new developments, including legislation on wind.

Wetsel received his J.D. from The University of Texas School of Law in 1977. He taught Wind Law at The University of Texas at Austin School of Law, where he served as as adjunct professor, from 2012-2018. He currently serves as adjunct professor at Texas Tech University School of Law. In 2011, Wetsel co-authored the first treatise on Texas Wind Law with Professor Ernest Smith, Steven DeWolf, and Becky Diffen. He is a frequent speaker on wind energy issues throughout the United States.

For our 2019 Symposium, Texas Hispanic Journal of Law & Policy will host a Latino Lunch Series every Tuesday of February with speakers discussing various legal and policy issues on the U.S.-Mexico border.

Trade on the Border: Human, Business, and Drugs

This panel will discuss trade on the border, including labor, business and manufacturing, as well as drug and human trafficking. The discussion will include how these various forms of trade impact the relationship between Mexico and the United States, as well as the legal and societal impacts on the border. Additionally, the panel will discuss current issues of trade including the new North American trade agreement, USMCA.

For its annual production, Assault and Flattery presents Game of Loans: A Song of Vice and Liars. This year, the show will run the weekend of February 28th to March 3rd. Shows will take place on Thursday, February 28th (at 7pm), Friday, March 1st (at 7pm), Saturday, March 2nd (at 7pm), and Sunday, March 3rd (at 2pm). Shows will take place at the school of social work.

Each year, A&F puts on a yearly musical production, written by and starring students, and featuring faculty and staff, as well as the law school's premier a cappella group, the Supreme Chorus (formerly known as Medley), and band, §ex Parte. Cast range from having no theater experience, to years and years of such experience, but all are united in their desire to enjoy their time at law school, as well as each others' company, through satire and parody.
