Special education law is rich with opportunities for law students and lawyers, either as a practice focus or as pro bono work. This panel is geared towards law students who hope to do special education cases now or later in solo or firm practice. Experienced attorneys will describe their compelling special education work and recent developments in the law. The goal is to describe how law students can get involved in small or big ways in taking on this kind of work – in informal negotiation settings, in trial, or on appeal. The Texas Law Professional Development Institute: Prepared For Practice is taught by industry experts and practicing attorneys, covering facets of new attorney professionalism most sought after by legal employers. Now in its ninth year, the five-week Institute is promoted widely to employers, many of whom contributed to its content. Do we pay enough attention to state constitutional provisions that protect individual rights? State and federal courts often focus on the U.S. Constitution and ignore state constitutions. In a fascinating new book, 51 Imperfect Solutions, Judge Jeffrey Sutton of the United States Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit argues that state and federal courts should give far more attention to state constitutional provisions than they often do. Judge Sutton, Chief Judge Lee Rosenthal (S.D. Tex.) and Professor Sandy Levinson will discuss the book in a mini-symposium during the lunch hour on February 4th.
