An eviction crisis -- fueled by a history of racially discriminatory housing policies, a lack of affordable housing, chronic underfunding of government subsidized housing, and a lack of adequate tenant protections -- is growing in magnitude as the COVID pandemic continues. What does this crisis look like in Texas? This event will examine the eviction crisis in America with a focus on its disproportionate impact on black and brown communities and the way the COVID-19 pandemic has exacerbated this already existing crisis. The event will begin with a quick presentation demonstrating the urgency of the crisis and then shift to a panel discussion featuring housing lawyers, community organizers, and a local judge who see this crisis in action on a daily basis and are working to stem its profoundly negative impacts.

Beyond two high profile Supreme Court appointments, President Donald Trump continues to tout his 200+ lifetime appointments to the federal bench as a significant achievement with long-lasting effects on American law. However, some have argued less is going on here than meets the eye, with President Trump's influence on the bench less extensive than his predecessors at this point in their presidencies.

How does this administration's influence on the federal courts stack up to previous administrations? Has the quality and caliber of nominees remained constant? What is the current balance of power within the circuit courts, and what has that meant in practice for the kinds of judgments courts are issuing? Why are confirmation hearings increasingly contentious? How has the influx of Trump nominees altered (if at all) the day-to-day practice of law in federal courts?

Join Professor Jonathan Adler of Case Western Reserve University School of Law and Professor Russell Wheeler of The Brookings Institution and The Governance Institute to discuss these topics via Zoom on Thursday, September 10 at 5:30pm.

In lieu of our usual Bar Review, SBA will be hosting a weekly Ex Parke this semester on Thursday evenings! This is a great opportunity to meet students from other 1L sections as well as other class years. Each week we will visit a park for an outdoor, socially-distanced hangout. There will be blankets spread out so students can meet up in groups of no more than 10. We kindly ask that you arrive close to the assigned time for your class year in the schedule below. You are welcome to stay longer than 30 minutes, but this schedule should help keep us from having too many people showing up at once. Although we will be off-campus, City of Austin and Zilker Park rules still apply. This requires wearing a mask, maintaining 6 feet of distance from others, congregating in groups of no more than 10, and no alcoholic beverages. Masks are required at all times unless you are snacking in an area we will designate. Please join us for a moderated discussion with our esteemed guest, Senator Wendy Davis, about her campaign platform for representing Texas’s 21st congressional district in the United States House of Representatives.

Senator Davis is a graduate of both Texas Christian University and Harvard Law School. After law school, she served as a law clerk for the Northern District of Texas and was a litigation associate in Haynes & Boone’s Fort Worth office. She served on the Fort Worth City Council for nine years before representing Tarrant County in the Texas Senate from 2009 to 2015. In 2013, Senator Davis performed her epic, 13-hour filibuster on the Senate floor to halt the passage of a bill that would ban abortions after 20 weeks of pregnancy and set requirements that would effectively shut down many women’s health clinics. After her campaign for Governor of Texas in 2014, Senator Davis founded the nonprofit Deeds Not Words to empower young women to organize, advocate for policy change, and increase voter participation. In July 2019, Senator Davis announced her candidacy to represent Texas’s 21st congressional district in the United States House of Representatives, running against incumbent Republican Chip Roy. We are so excited that Senator Davis is joining us to talk about her platform and a lawyer’s role in politics, and hope to see you there!

The Trail Advocacy Program will meet every other Saturday morning for hiking some of the greatest vistas ATX has to offer. The first Trail Advocacy hike will be at Town Lake on Saturday, September 12th. In accordance with City of Austin standards, we will hike in groups of no more than 10 and adhere to the current social-distancing guidelines.
