The Rapoport Center and the Rothko Chapel are pleased to announce that Charles M. Blow will deliver the sixth annual Frances Tarlton “Sissy” Farenthold Endowed Lecture in Peace, Social Justice and Human Rights.

Charles M. Blow is an Op-Ed columnist at The New York Times, where his column appears on Mondays and Thursdays. Mr. Blow’s columns tackle hot-button issues such as social justice, racial equality, presidential politics, police violence, gun control, and the Black Lives Matter Movement.He is also a CNN commentator and was a Presidential Visiting Professor at Yale, where he taught a seminar on media and politics. Mr. Blow is the author of the critically acclaimed New York Times best-selling memoir, Fire Shut Up in My Bones. The book won a Lambda Literary Award and the Sperber Prize and made multiple prominent lists of best books published in 2014. People Magazine called it “searing and unforgettable.” Previously, Mr. Blow was art director of National Geographic Magazine and worked at The Detroit News. Mr. Blow graduated magna cum laude from Grambling State University in Louisiana, where he received a B.A. in mass communications.

The event is hosted by the Rothko Chapel in Houston and will take place online on October 1, 2020. Mr. Blow and audience members will join virtually.

In lieu of our usual Bar Review, SBA will be hosting a weekly Ex Parke this semester on Thursday evenings! This is a great opportunity to meet students from other 1L sections as well as other class years. Each week we will visit a park for an outdoor, socially-distanced hangout. There will be blankets spread out so students can meet up in groups of no more than 10. We kindly ask that you arrive close to the assigned time for your class year in the schedule below. You are welcome to stay longer than 30 minutes, but this schedule should help keep us from having too many people showing up at once. Although we will be off-campus, City of Austin and Zilker Park rules still apply. This requires wearing a mask, maintaining 6 feet of distance from others, congregating in groups of no more than 10, and no alcoholic beverages. Masks are required at all times unless you are snacking in an area we will designate. Join the American Journal of Criminal Law for our Career Talks with John Bash. John Bash is the current United States Attorney for the Western District of Texas. John Bash graduated from Harvard Law School before clerking on the United States Court of Appeals for the DC circuit and then clerking for the late Antonin Scalia on the Supreme Court. Following his clerkships, he Gibson, Dunn, & Crutcher and then as an assistant solicitor general in the United States Department of Justice.

John Bash has served in his current role since 2017. A United States attorney is the chief federal law enforcement officer in their district and is charged with enforcing federal laws. Each United States attorney is also involved in civil litigation where the United States is a party.

Renee Knake Jefferson is an award-winning author and Professor of Law and the Doherty Chair in Legal Ethics at the University of Houston. Knake Jefferson is a Fulbright recipient and elected member of the American Law Institute. She is a frequent speaker at top research universities around the world whose research focuses on innovation in the regulation of legal services.

Hannah Brenner Johnson is the Vice Dean for Academic and Student Affairs and an Associate Professor of Law at California Western School of Law. Brenner Johnson served as the first executive director of the Center for Women in Law. Her research focuses on the intersection of law and gender, with a specific lens on gender inequality in the legal profession and gender-based violence.

Marcy Hogan Greer (moderator) Marcy Greer has 30 years of experience in federal and state trial and appellate courts throughout the country. As managing partner of Alexander Dubose & Jefferson, her practice includes appeals, as well as class actions and mass tort cases, including federal and state multidistrict litigation. This experience contributed to her recognition by Chambers USA for Appellate Litigation, as well as Best Lawyers in America in Appellate, Bet-the-Company and Commercial Litigation. In addition, she was honored as “Lawyer of the Year” in 2012 and 2016 for Austin Appellate Practice and Austin Bet-the-Company Litigation in 2015. In 2017, The Texas Bar Association awarded her the Louise B. Raggio Award, which recognizes attorneys who have actively addressed the needs and issues of women in the legal profession and the community. Marcy also has been Board Certified in Civil Appellate Law by the Texas Board of Legal Specialization since 1997.

The Journal of Law and Technology at Texas (JOLTT) wants to highlight the role of women in technology-related law. We have brought together speakers from various industries to speak about their experiences, career paths, and roles for a zoom panel with students.

Dr. Melissa Wasserman (Moderator) Dr. Wasserman is a professor at the University of Texas School of Law whose research focuses on the institutional design of innovation policy, with a particular emphasis on patent law and administrative law. Dr. Wasserman received her B.S. in chemical engineering from Penn. State University, her Ph.D. in chemical engineering from Princeton for her work on thermodynamics of network-forming liquids at low temperatures, and her J.D. from the NYU School of Law. Prior to joining Texas Law in 2016, Dr. Wasserman clerked on the U.S. Court of Appeals, was an academic fellow and lecturer at the Petrie Flom Center for Health Law, Policy, Biotechnology, and Bioethics, and served as a professor at the University of Illinois College of Law.

Judge Beth Shaw (Panelist) Administrative Patent Judge Beth Shaw was appointed to the Patent Trial and Appeal Board (PTAB) on May 19, 2014. Judge Shaw began her career as a junior software engineer at the Science Applications International Corporation (SAIC). She then entered private practice, practicing at the firm Finnegan, Henderson, Farabow, Garrett & Dunner, LLP, interrupted by the opportunity to serve as a law clerk on the U.S. Court of Appeals. Judge Shaw earned her J.D. from George Mason University School of Law and a B.S. in computer science from Johns Hopkins University.

Jessica Jacobs (Panelist) Jessica Jacobs is the VP and General Counsel at Decent, a San Francisco based health insurance company with a mission to provide affordable health insurance for all, and specifically for those who are self-employed. Jessica has served on the boards of 6 other San Francisco based companies as general counsel and in other officer positions since 2010, and has an extensive knowledge of the technological issues facing in-house counsel. Jessica earned a B.S. in economics from California Polytechnic State University-San Luis Obispo and her J.D. from the University of Texas School of Law.

Mary Alexander Myers (Panelist) Mary Alexander Myers is an attorney in Jones Day's Atlanta office that works closely with clients on a range of strategic technology transactions and cybersecurity and data privacy matters focused on protecting key data assets. Mary Alexander frequently speaks on technology and cyber-related issues and is a Certified Information Professional (CIPP/US) by the International Association of Privacy Professionals (IAPP). Mary Alexander earned a B.A. in History from Emory University and her J.D. from the Vanderbilt University School of Law.

Join the American Journal of Criminal Law as we host Judge Mark Lane for our career talks. Judge Lane is the United States Magistrate Judge for the Western District of Texas. A magistrate judge derives his or her authority from the federal district court and is given duties as fits the needs of the court. Often a magistrate judge's duties include issuing search warrants, issuing arrest warrants, overseeing the first appearances of criminal defendants, setting bail, holding preliminary hearings and examinations, and presiding over misdemeanor and petty offense cases.

Before serving as the US magistrate judge, Judge Lane was a prosecutor in Austin before becoming an Assistant United States Attorney.
