    Patent Law Careers and the PTO Exam

    Join Mark Dighton, Practising Law Institute (PLI)’s Director of Law School Relations and Administrative Director of their Patent Office Exam Course, for a conversation about patent careers and the Patent Office Exam that is a gateway to most of those careers. Topics for discussion include: the latest info on the Patent Office Exam, who can take it, how it works (it's online and “on demand”), when you should take it (you don't need to . . . and probably shouldn't...wait until you graduate), and recommendations on when and how to study for this challenging exam.

    Jarrett Adams: Defendant to Defender

    Join the American Constitution Society (ACS) and the William Wayne Justice Center in welcoming Attorney Jarrett Adams to speak at the law school. Adams will speak to the connection between trauma and the law, the effects of a system that works against those who have already had difficult life experiences, and how law students and future lawyers can work to change the system.

    Adams clerked for the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York and worked at the Innocence Project before he launched the Law Offices of Jarrett Adams, PLLC. Additionally, Adams is the co-founder of Life After Justice, a nonprofit dedicated to preventing wrongful convictions and building an ecosystem of support and empowerment for exonerees. In Adams’ highly acclaimed first book, he talks about his fight towards exoneration after a wrongful conviction. The memoir follows the aftermath of reclaiming and rebuilding his life after justice and his drive to help other exonerees do it too. Adams earned his Juris Doctorate from Loyola University Chicago School of Law. He was awarded the National Defender Investigator Association Investigator of the Year award for his work with the clemency petition of Reynolds Wintersmith, ultimately granted by President Barack Obama.

    Strauss Center Presents: Matt Olsen

    On Friday, March 25, the Strauss Center will host “A Conversation with Matt Olsen, Assistant Attorney General for National Security” at Texas Law’s Eidman Courtroom from 11:50 am – 12:50 pm. Lunch will be provided at the event.

    BIOGRAPHY Matt Olsen is the Assistant Attorney General for National Security. In that capacity, he leads the Department of Justice’s mission to combat terrorism, espionage, cyber crime, and other threats to the national security.

    From 2011 to 2014, Olsen served as the Director of the National Counterterrorism Center. Prior to leading NCTC, Olsen was the General Counsel for the National Security Agency.

    For 18 years, Olsen worked at the Department of Justice as a career attorney and in a number of leadership positions. He served as an Associate Deputy Attorney General for national security and was Special Counselor to the Attorney General. In 2006, Olsen helped establish the National Security Division and served as the first career Deputy Assistant Attorney General for National Security.

    For over a decade, Olsen was a federal prosecutor in the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Columbia. He also served as Special Counsel to the Director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, supporting the post-9/11 transformation of the FBI. Olsen began his public service career as a trial attorney in the Civil Rights Division of the Department of Justice.

    Olsen was a law clerk to the Honorable Norma Holloway Johnson in the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia. He graduated from Harvard Law School and the University of Virginia.

    Texas Law Wills Clinic for UT Employees

    Students will interview UT employees and their families, and draft both wills and deeds designed to transfer property outside of probate court. Students also will help families obtain reductions in their property taxes where applicable.
