    Making Sure You Deliver at Your Firm

    The Texas Law Professional Development Series is taught by industry experts and practicing attorneys, covering facets of new attorney professionalism most sought after by legal employers. This must-attend program will help you prepare for your summer clerkship or postgraduate job.

    This session covers communication with the various stakeholders a junior associate will encounter in a law firm, from partners to clients to support staff including how expectations differ between partners and associates, and how to customize your communication style to the partner, the client, and your peers, and how to develop beneficial working relationships with the support staff at your firm. Panelists will offer tips and tools for communicating in a professional manner across a diverse and inclusive law firm environment, including a discussion about the role that technology/social media/apps/texting plays in your communications and legal practice.

    TJOGEL's Spring Happy will be on Thursday, April 7 from 6:30pm-8:30pm. The location for the Happy Hour is still being decided. Beverages and Hors d'Oeuvres will be served, and we will be inviting lawyers from many different firms and companies to attend the event. Since the law school does not allow us to pay for more than 2 drinks per student, you will only receive two drink tickets when you check in, but there will be a cash bar to purchase more beverages. Attire is business casual. Dues must be paid to RSVP.

    Strauss Center: War Crimes

    On Wednesday, April 13, the Strauss Center will host an event on “War Crimes in Russia’s Invasion of Ukraine” with UT Law School Professor Derek Jinks. Russian atrocities in Ukraine have shocked the world, reviving memories of some of the darkest moments of the 20th Century. Many of these acts are war crimes, a phrase that is used by many but fully understood by few.

    TELJ Symposium

    The Texas Environmental Law Journal (TELJ) is excited to announce our Symposium on Legal System Changes to Address Climate Change and the Energy Transition. The Symposium will bring together current practitioners in the area of climate change law with scholars and emerging thought leaders.

    Austin Inns of Court Info Session

    Learn about becoming a 2022-23 student member of one of the Austin Inns of Court! The Inns provide excellent opportunities for law students to meet and be mentored by local judges and practicing attorneys across a range of fields. Each Inn meets monthly, fall through spring. Students are assigned to a team of attorneys and judges, which meets to prepare and then present a program at one of the Inn meetings. This is an excellent opportunity for students to socialize with and be mentored by practicing attorneys and judges.

    Ending DOJ’s China Initiative

    Join Michael Ellis, Visiting Fellow for Law and Technology, at The Heritage Foundation or a discussion on the Biden Administration’s decision to end DOJ’S China Initiative.

    Prior to joining Heritage, Mr. Ellis was general counsel of the National Security Agency and served in several different national security roles in the Trump administration. Prior to his service at the White House, Mr. Ellis was general counsel of the U.S. House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence.

    The event will be moderated by Prof. Adam Klein, Deputy Director of the Strauss Center for International Security and Law.

    DOJ launched a “China Initiative” in November 2018 that sought to to identify and prosecute trade secret theft, hacking, and economic espionage; protect U.S. critical infrastructure against threats from Chinese foreign direct investment and supply chain compromises; and combat covert efforts to influence the American public and policymakers. In February 2022, the Biden administration announced it would end the initiative.

    Mr. Ellis will discuss foreign policy and national security consequences of the decision and the benefits of the China Initiative.

    Texas Constitutional Law Assembly

    The Constitutional Studies Program will host the inaugural Texas Constitutional Law Assembly, a first-of-its-kind conference for high school students in grades 9-12. This free event will be held at the Law School on April 16, 2022. The purpose of the Assembly is to engage high school students in discussion on democracy, rights, and the rule of law.

    We are grateful to our outstanding roster of speakers: Justice Evan Young and Professors Zach Elkins, Mimi Marziani, Liz Sepper, and Steve Vladeck. The tentative program is available here.

    Registration is available here for free, though space is limited. Note that any student attending the Assembly must be accompanied by a school representative; no student may register on her/his/their own, nor attend on her/his/their own.
