Co-sponsored with the University of Texas Athenaeum, this debate will analyze the recent Supreme Court decision in Students for Fair Admission v Harvard and the fate of affirmative action in America. Debating whether the court reached the correct outcome in this case will be Cory Liu and David Hinojosa. Cory Liu, a local Austin attorney, is a member of the Butler Snow litigation team and filed an amicus brief in this decision. David Hinojosa is the Director of the Educational Opportunities Project at the Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights and he argued before the Supreme Court in this case on behalf of student-intervenors.

Texas Law alumnus David Hinojosa ’00 argued UNC’s side of the big affirmative case at the Supreme Court last spring. He’ll discuss his experience there, talk about his career as a civil-rights lawyer, and take questions. Professor Farnsworth will moderate.

Free litigation workshop for students interested in learning/strengthening communication skills and trial skills. Workshop will take place four Friday afternoons at the beginning of the semester (do not have to attend all four). Weekly topic schedule below. Students will hear a brief lecture on the specific days topic and will then breakout in to small groups, led by local practitioners, where they will learn by doing.

Weekly Schedule: 8/25 - Public Speaking/Effective Communication; 9/1 - Storytelling/Opening Statements; 9/15 - Direct Examination; 9/22 - Cross Examination.

Any students welcome. Highly recommended for any students interested in participating in interscholastic mock trial.
