    Lott Medal Presentation & Dinner

    In 2011, the University of Texas School of Law established the Virgil C. Lott Medal to honor our first African American graduate. The medal is presented at a gala dinner, and recipients are chosen by a distinguished committee headed by Dean Bobby Chesney, former Dean Larry Sager, and previous winners. Dean Chesney describes the mission of the award and ceremony thusly: “Virgil C. Lott ’53 was the first African American graduate of The University of Texas School of Law. The Law School commissioned the Virgil C. Lott Medal to honor the memory of this pioneer and distinguished alumnus. This award honors men and women who, like Mr. Lott, have made significant contributions to the legal profession and to the improvement of understanding among all peoples.”

    Understanding the Business of Law

    Through this nuts-and-bolts presentation, you will learn the mechanics of billable hours, rate structures, write-offs, realization, and law firm capitalization. You should come away with an understanding of how a law firm operates as a business and the implications of that business model for attorneys of the firm. This candid and informative discussion is important for law students planning to work in a private law firm to understand the business of law. The program is open to all class years. Lunch will be served.

    GRITS 2025

    GRITS is a student-run, public interest law conference that focuses on the difficulties and constraints inherent to social justice work in the South, and the unique strategies that legal practitioners and other public interest workers have developed to meet those needs.

    The conference emphasizes innovative, progressive, and even radical approaches to building community among students, practitioners, and community activists in the South to bring about social change.

    The conference is an opportunity for law students, lawyers, and activists to build coalitions, share strategies for progressive lawyering, and develop new approaches for the future.

    This is TIPLJ’s annual Symposium. During the event, we will discuss ongoing/emerging topics of interest within Intellectual Property law. Several of the topics will provide CLE credit. This year's topic is "The Cost of Innovation" and focuses on different costs associated with building, maintaining, and enforcing an IP portfolio. We will also discuss ways to monetize IP.

    Black Women's Brunch

    A Brunch to celebrate Black Women in the legal profession with food, guest speakers, and networking opportunities! The event will begin between 10:00-10:30 am with a "coffee n chat" session with NRF. Next up is the career panel then the actual brunch portion of the event. This will give the students an opportunity to eat, socialize, and network with law school graduates in different fields. Next comes a wellness workshop followed by 2 more speakers. (And if we're lucky, Representative Jasmine Crockett will close out with a few words).
