    PSCD Day I

    Hosted annually by the UT Law Career Services Office, Public Service Career Day (PSCD) is the largest public service job fair for law students in Texas. During both days of PSCD, which will be held February 3-4, 2011, public interest and government employers will conduct on-campus interviews for paid and unpaid summer and permanent positions in the Career Services Interview Suite. On Thursday, February 3, certain employers will also host informational tables in the Law School's Susman Godfrey Atrium from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.

    First, second, third-year and/or LL.M. students and alumni up to one year after graduation from all nine Texas law schools are eligible to participate in this program. You must register to use the Texas Consortium Symplicity Module, which is a different module than the UT Law Symplicity.

    Public Service Career Day Table Talk

    During the first day of Public Service Career Day, representatives from public interest organizations, as well as federal, state and local government agencies will host informational tables, which provide an excellent opportunity for students to network and find out about current volunteer opportunities, summer internships and postgraduate positions.     Applying for Judicial Clerkships-Part I

    This is the first of two mandatory meetings for 2Ls & 3Ls who will be applying for judicial clerkships. UT Law Judicial Clerkship Advisors will discuss how to determine what courts you are competitive for, how to select judges, and how and when to apply for clerkships.

    3Ls: For those of you who have already applied for clerkships, you do not need to attend this meeting. You should speak to your recommenders by late March to reaffirm their willingness to write letters or seek out new recommenders. You do not need to meet with a clerkship advisor unless you want to. However, you must attend the second mandatory meeting on April 5, 2011 to learn about the new application process.

    Lives in the Law: Jonathan Rapping

    Jonathan Rapping is the Founder/CEO of the Southern Public Defender Training Center (SPDTC). The Southern Public Defender Training Center provides training to new public defenders throughout the South. Its mission to inspire, mobilize and train legal professionals to provide the highest quality defense representation to people unable to afford an attorney. From 11:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m., Mr. Rapping will talk about the culture of neglect that permeates the criminal justice system as it applies to poor people in this country and importance of building a generation of public defenders to reform that culture. From 12:30-1:30 p.m. he will talk about his life in the law. Students may attend one or both sessions. Lunch and refreshments will be served.     Sign Up for Speed Networking

    Space is limited to the first 35 students who sign up IN PERSON in the CSO (TNH 3.130) at 8 a.m. on Wednesday, March 2 for our Speed Networking workshop, which will be held Tuesday, March 8 from 5-6:30 p.m. at George's Cafe. You must be able to attend the entire event from 5-6:30 p.m. Students who sign up in advance will have the opportunity to network one-on-one with legal professionals from a variety of practice areas, as well as fellow students, during several short (8-10 minutes) speed networking rounds.     Equal Justice Works Info Session

    Come learn about Equal Justice Works’ public interest programs and initiatives. Equal Justice Works’ senior program manager Charlene Gomes will discuss both summer and postgraduate opportunities with Equal Justice Works and options for relieving educational debt after you graduate.

    The Equal Justice Works Summer Corps Program provides financial support for law students who dedicate their summer to providing critically needed legal assistance in low-income and underserved communities. Summer Corps members are awarded a $1,132 Americorps Education voucher for their service.

    The Equal Justice Works AmeriCorps Legal Fellows Program places fellows in one- or two-year fellowships at host organizations around the country. Fellows play a critical role in securing affordable housing, lost wages, orders of protection, health care, public benefits and education for low-income and underserved communities.

    The Equal Justice Works Postgraduate Fellowship Program provides financial and technical support to lawyers working on innovative and effective legal projects. The two-year fellowships offer salary and generous loan repayment assistance.

    The Public Defender Corps is an Equal justice Works and Southern Public Defender Training Center program that provides three-year fellowships aimed at addressing the ongoing national crisis of providing quality representation to accused persons who cannot afford counsel.
