Alternatives to Guardianship Clinic

Students will educate people with disabilities and their supporters about legal alternatives to guardianship. Students will explain available legal supports, including powers of attorney and supported decision-making agreements. Students will help prepare appropriate legal support documents for individuals attending the clinic.

Organization

Texas Law Preservation of Rights Project

The Alternatives to Guardianship Clinic is part of the Mithoff Program’s Preservation of Rights Project (PORP). PORP hosts clinics related to estate planning, elder and disability planning, and guardianship law. The Alternatives to Guardianship Clinic is intended to provide community access to information on legal alternatives that provide supports to people with disabilities and that may avoid a potential need for guardianship and the loss of rights that accompanies guardianship.
