Students will work with LSJA lawyers for a week over winter break. Students will assist LSJA in developing a toolkit for use by defense counsel appointed to assist eligible youth committed to the Texas Juvenile Justice Department in connection with potential Determinate Sentence Transfer hearings to the adult state prison system. Interns will conduct research of statutory provisions, case law, and agency administrative procedures and rules to develop a workflow based on best practices. Work also will involve curating forms, resource information, and materials from defense counsel, agency personnel, the special prosecution unit, and others statewide who are currently involved in defending Determinate Sentence transfer cases and youth who are disciplined or prosecuted for additional crimes while in TJJD custody. The toolkit will be used by LSJA and attorney advocates to facilitate the provision of legal services.
