Students will facilitate small group counseling sessions to guide parents of children with disabilities through conversations about special education law. Training will focus on how to use the clinic intake instrument to gather all relevant information and then assist parents in making a plan for next steps in advocating for their child’s improved services, particularly in the time of COVID. Some families that receive assistance at the SPEAK counseling session will be accepted for special education case work that will continue during the academic year. Students will attend a SPEAK counseling session and, if their case is selected, have the option of continuing case work under supervision of clinical faculty. (Additional special education case work opportunities may be available later in the academic year if a SPEAK volunteer chooses not to continue on a case after a counseling session and/or if additional students are needed to staff a case work team.)
