Students will assist small businesses by conducting brief legal checkups and discussing common corporate governance issues with business owners, including compliance with new Beneficial Ownership Reporting requirements under the Corporate Transparency Act. Students also may have the opportunity to shadow attorneys in consultations covering topics such as entity formation, general liability, contracts, employment procedure, negotiation, patents, and trademarks.
Organization
Mithoff Pro Bono Program
The Mithoff Program’s Transactional Project provides legal support to local small business owners without access to legal services and gives law students an opportunity to build transactional legal skills. The project educates entrepreneurs on topics such as choosing a business entity, LLC formation, trademark, and corporate governance and compliance issues. The September 18 event will be conducted in partnership with Economic Growth Business Income Incubator (EGBI) and Texas RioGrande Legal Aid (TRLA). EGBI provides training, coaching, and support to aspiring and existing business owners who are traditionally underserved and face barriers to growing a successful business. TRLA is the third largest legal services provider in the nation and the largest in the state of Texas.
