    Meeting: Health Law & Bioethics Society

    The Health Law & Bioethics Society will be holding its first meeting of the semester on Tuesday, February 5th at noon in TNH 3.114.

    This semester we will host and event which will be a discussion by two leading experts from the Center for Public Policy Priorities and the Texas Public Policy Foundation about the direction the State is taking in light of the Supreme Court’s Affordable Care Act decision. Tentatively, this event will be held on March 18th, the first class day after Spring Break.

    Near the end of the semester, we will hold elections for the HL&BS Board for the 2013-2014 academic year.

    Alien Tort Claims Act:

    Giant multi-national companies are being sued in U.S. Courts for human rights abuses committed against foreign nationals in foreign territories!

    Come learn about this fascinating and controversial topic, currently under review by the U.S. Supreme Court in Kiobel v. Royal Dutch Shell. There, Nigerian citizens have sued petroleum giant Shell for damages in connection with the killing and violence in the Ogoni Delta.

    This event will have all sides represented and seek to provide an educational forum for students from all perspectives. The Law School's Professor Derek Jinks, an expert in international law, will be among the panelists.

    Join us as the Federalist Society and the American Constitution Society host a panel discussion on Section Five of the Voting Rights Act as the U.S. Supreme Court gears up to hear oral arguments in Shelby County v. Holder, a case directly challenging Section Five's constitutionality.
