Come hear what it's like to argue and win a case in front of the Supreme Court of the United States from two of UT Law’s own: Jane Webre, '89, counsel of record in Gunn v. Minton, and Cindy Connolly, '96, co-counsel. Jane and Cindy will discuss their experiences of taking a case from state jurisdiction to the national stage, including the pressures and highlights associated with arguing and ultimately winning a case heard by SCOTUS.

Jane and Cindy brought Gunn v. Minton to the Supreme Court of the United States requesting that a decision by the Supreme Court of Texas be reversed. The state court held that a group of legal malpractice claims, involving an underlying patent matter, fell exclusively within federal jurisdiction. Jane and Cindy were successful, and the Supreme Court of the United States decided that the claims would go forward in state court. Read the full SCOTUS opinion here.

GIDEON’S ARMY (HBO Documentary Films, 2013 Sundance Films Official Selection) follows the personal stories of Travis Williams, Brandy Alexander and June Hardwick, three young public defenders who are part of a small group of idealistic lawyers in the Deep South challenging the assumptions that drive a criminal justice system strained to the breaking point. Backed by mentor Jonathan “Rap” Rapping, a charismatic leader who heads the Southern Public Defender Training Center (now known as Gideon’s Promise) they struggle against long hours, low pay and staggering caseloads so common that even the most committed often give up in their first year. Nearly 50 years since the landmark Supreme Court ruling Gideon vs. Wainwright that established the right to counsel, can these courageous lawyers revolutionize the way America thinks about indigent defense and make “justice for all” a reality?

There are currently more than 1.4 million Syrian refugees and 4.5 million internally displaced persons. Many of these refugees live in abject squalor in camps far from their homes. Join us to learn more about the situation and the roles humanitarian, human rights, and immigration law have played in shaping it. Tim Wilkins, head of Bracewell & Giuliani’s firm-wide Environmental and Natural Resources practice group, and Vic Ramirez, associate general counsel at the Lower Colorado River Authority, will speak on ethics issues, which may include: professionalism, communications with clients/opposing counsel, confidentiality of information, candor towards the tribunal, and revolving door issues. Katie Bennett, associate at Katten Muchen Rosenman LLP, and Martha Landwehr, general counsel for the Texas Chemical Council, will give practice pointers to new and future attorneys, including tips for communicating with partners and clients, preparing useful work product, navigating law firm/government politics, and interfacing with staff and co-counsel. Join the Texas Board of Advocates for insight into how battle-tested military strategies can be applied to litigation.

Lt. Colonel Dreier has a military career spanning from operations Classic Resolve and Earnest Will during the Cold War (in which he served as an intelligence analyst), through the wars in Afghanistan (where he served as a strategic policy planner) and Iraq (working on reconstruction of judicial and executive functions in Wasit Province, Iraq). He additionally served with both the Marine Corps Embassy Security Group (Department of State), and the Marine Corps Special Operations Command before entering the Judge Advocate General’s (JAG) Corps of the U.S. Army at the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. He has handled over three hundred cases and been sole or lead counsel in thirty-three contested trials, of which he has won thirty.

The presentation draws parallels between operational military planning and trial, and highlights how these planning techniques can form effective trial strategies. The presentation covers military science, psychology, and game theory.

Reminder for 3Ls planning to sit for the Texas February 2014 Bar Exam: in order to sit for the exam, your In-State Application to Take the TX Bar Exam must be post-marked by October 30. This deadline is strictly enforced.

Applicants who have not yet filed their Declaration of Intention to Study Law must do so prior to or with their In-State Application.

The timely postmark deadline for 1Ls and out-of-state transfers students to submit their TX Declaration of Intention to Study Law to Study Law to the Board of Law Examiners (BLE) is October 1st.

All students (including 2L and 3L late-filers) who submit their Declaration by October 1st, 2013 are eligible to have their fingerprints taken on location at The School of Law on Tuesday, October 30th—Thursday, November 1st. The BLE will accept the fingerprints taken at this session, though it is after the 10/1 deadline.

Qualifying students who wish to participate must follow the registration instructions and arrive promptly for their appointment with their FAST form filled out and proper ID on hand. Only registered students will be admitted.

Each year, the Law School opens its doors for faculty, staff, and students to bring their littlest ghosts and goblins on a haunted tour. The SAO will have a list of offices participating in the Trick-or-Treat Tour.
