    TILJ Symposium 2015

Each year, the Texas International Law Journal organizes a symposium related to a developing area of international law. This year, the journal has selected “Immigration and Freedom of Movement” as our topic. The symposium will be held at the Eidman Courtroom at the University of Texas School of Law on February 5, 2015. We are excited to announce that this year’s symposium will be one of the largest in the journal’s history, with ten speakers from three countries. We aim to explore issues concerning international trade and migrant workers; immigration detention and other restrictions on movement; and international human rights. We will additionally host a lunchtime roundtable discussion on recent developments in domestic immigration policy and its impact on Texas. We are also proud to welcome Professor Hiroshi Motomura from the University of California at Los Angeles to deliver our keynote address.

    Understanding Ag-Gag: Far

Please join the Student Animal Legal Defense Fund Chapter for a free vegan lunch and discussion on ag-gag laws in the U.S. Co-sponsored by the Environmental Law Society, the American Constitution Society, and CHLSA (Chicano/Hispanic Law Students Association)

    Guest Speakers include:

William Rivas-Rivas from the Animal Legal Defense Fund, and Daphne Silverman from the National Lawyers Guild.

Ag-gag overview: Animal abuse, food safety violations, and illegal working conditions are rampant on factory farms. Undercover investigations have exposed egregious animal cruelty and shed light on common agricultural practices that cause significant animal suffering.

Undercover investigations have resulted in criminal animal cruelty convictions, national meat recalls, plant closures, and civil lawsuits—all of which make undercover investigations and reporting an absolute necessity for protecting animals and public health and safety. Journalistic exposés of the meat industry have led to landmark food safety laws such as the Federal Meat Inspection Act and the Pure Food and Drug Act. These laws help protect the public from “mad cow” disease, E. coli, and salmonella.
