  2. 12:15pm 2023-01-10T13:30-06:00
    Creative Climate Communications

On Tuesday, January 10, the Strauss Center hosts Dr. Max Boykoff, Chair of the Environmental Studies department at the University of Colorado Boulder, for a talk on “Creative Climate Communications: Food Security, Climate Science, Policy & Society.” This talk will be held at the LBJ School of Public Affairs as part of the Strauss Center’s Brumley Speaker Series.

In his talk, Max will interrogate climate policy and food security progress in the early days of 2023, on the heels of the United Nations climate negotiations in Sharm-el-Sheikh (COP 27) and in the context of decarbonization of industry and society. Attention will be paid to how media coverage of climate change and how contrarian influences (such as the Heartland Institute) shape these ongoing policy processes.

His presentation will then pivot to highlighting what kinds of news-based communications work (where, when, why, and under what conditions) in the 21st century communication environment within which conversations about climate change in the science-policy interface have been stuck.

Max will then explore creative climate communications we can use in order to help understand and critically analyze how they influence climate politics and science policy. Throughout the presentation, Boykoff will talk through various aspects of historically-sensitive, dynamic, and culturally-situated climate communications and governance, across multiple scales.

This event is free and open to the public. No RSVP required. Lunch will be served. For more information on this event, contact Brittany Horton at brittany.horton@austin.utexas.edu.
