Join the Justice Center for a discussion about grades for public interest law students whose lived experiences intersect with the legal systems they seek to challenge in their careers. We’ll also touch on resources for the summer public interest job search and funding.

Law schools need to do more to support the well-being, needs, and leadership development of students of color, students from low-income backgrounds, students with disabilities, immigrant students, LGBTQ+ students, formerly incarcerated students, and students with families who have been impacted by the criminal or immigration enforcement systems. This space is meant to build a positive community for students who not only have these experiences, but whose public interest work as attorneys may be directly tied to their lived experiences and/or those of their loved ones.

This program seeks to serve as a space for dialogue, mentorship, and resource-sharing that is tailored to the particular needs, and strengths, of students in this position.

The Pathways Series empowers students to learn more about and engage with various legal careers and professionals. Through the Pathways Series, the Center highlights a variety of career paths and successful lawyers. The program exposes Texas Law students to the diversity of the legal field and provides opportunities for mentorship and networking. The program supports professional development for Texas Law students beginning their careers and for more senior professionals. This program is valuable to first-generation students and students and lawyers from underrepresented groups.

Does religious liberty mean religious citizens need not follow otherwise valid laws?

In his public lecture, University of Notre Dame Professor Vincent Phillip Muñoz – whose scholarship has been cited in multiple Supreme Court opinions, including by Justice Alito in Fulton and by Chief Justice Roberts and Justice Thomas in Espinoza v. Montana (2020) – will address this question and others, advancing his controversial and counter-intuitive thesis that the Founders’ understanding of religious liberty does not include a right to religious exemptions. Drawing on his new book, "Religious Liberty and the American Founding", Professor Muñoz will argue that Justice Scalia was (mostly) right and, accordingly, Justice Alito’s call for overturning Smith is mistaken, at least if the Founding Fathers are to guide First Amendment religious liberty jurisprudence.
