    8:30 to 9:30am (breakfast provided) - Michael Allen, a partner in Relman, Dane & Colfax, will discuss his cutting edge firm practice and how he transitioned from the nonprofit to the for-profit sector.

    9:30-10:30 am – Michael Allen will meet with students individually in the CSO suite.

    About Michael Allen and his firm:

    Relman, Dane & Colfax is a civil rights law firm based in Washington, D.C., with additional offices in Ohio and New Mexico that litigates civil rights cases in the areas of housing, lending, employment, public accommodations, education, and police accountability. The national practice includes individual and class action lawsuits on behalf of plaintiffs who have suffered discrimination and harassment on the basis of race, national origin, color, religion, sex, disability, age, familial status, source of income, and sexual orientation.

    Prior to joining Relman, Dane & Colfax, Michael Allen was Senior Staff Attorney at the Bazelon Center for Mental Health Law from 1995 to 2006, where he focused on civil rights policy development and litigation involving people with psychiatric disabilities. He previously was an attorney with Legal Services of Northern Virginia from 1985 to 1995, with a focus on representing low-income clients in housing litigation and policy advocacy.

Topics for discussion include:

    Pacific Legal Foundation Info Session

    Wen Fa, an attorney with the Pacific Legal Foundation, drafted the cert petition in a case heard by the Supreme Court of the United States, argued in the Ninth Circuit, published in the William and Mary Bill of Rights Journal, and has appeared in USA Today, the New York Times, Huffington Post, and NPR --- all within five years of graduation. Learn about how PLF defends individual liberty in courts across the United States, including nine wins in its last ten cases before the Supreme Court. As a member of PLF’s hiring committee, Wen will tell you how you can litigate the cases you read about in your casebooks.

    Summer Public Service Prep

    Working for a nonprofit or government agency this summer? This session will prepare you to thrive and get the most out of your summer work experience. Panelists will discuss how to handle opportunities and challenges that come up in these unique work environments, including receiving great work and supervision, and steering clear of ethical pitfalls. Panelists include Sarah Mae Jennings, 3L, former intern at Orleans Public Defenders and Public Defender Service; Rosann Mariappuram, 3L, former intern at Center for Reproductive Rights and Jane’s Due Process; Nichole Montalbano, 3L, former intern at the Travis County Attorney’s Office and the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of Texas; and Thales Smith, 2L, former intern at the Texas Attorney General’s Office. Presented by Judge Scott McCown, Clinical Professor, Children’s Rights Clinic and moderated by Lawson Konvalinka, Public Interest Career Counselor, and Kaycee Crisp, Government Career Counselor, from the CSO.

    Akin Gump Diversity Scholarship

    Attention 1Ls (Class of 2020): The Akin Gump/Robert Strauss Diversity Scholarship provides $25,000 to five outstanding (rising) second-year students at U.S. law schools to offset expenses for their third year of law school. The scholarships will be awarded to students who evidence a commitment to diversity in the legal profession, who demonstrate excellence and who can bring diverse viewpoints and experiences to the firm. In addition to the financial award, the scholarships include mentoring from firm lawyers and a paid second-year summer associate position in Dallas, Houston, Los Angeles, New York or Washington, D.C.

    Akin Gump’s Phyllis Young, Partner; Roxanne Tizravesh, Counsel; and Litian Chen, Associate, will be available to answer questions about working at Akin Gump and the scholarship after the program in the Career Services Interview Suite.

    Applications for the program will be accepted and considered on a rolling basis between July 2 and September 28, 2018. Candidates may apply to, and be considered by, only one Akin Gump office.
