Permission to audit a course conveys the privilege of listening and observing but not of handing in papers, taking part in discussion, or receiving evaluations. An auditor does not receive University credit for the course, nor is the course recorded on a transcript. Instructors and the Assistant Dean may refuse any request to audit a course.
A University student who wishes to audit a law course should obtain a Class Auditor Permit and secure the consent of the course instructor and the Assistant Dean for Student Affairs. Only graduate students enrolled in a degree programs at the University are permitted to audit law courses. Law students and undergraduates are not permitted to audit law courses.
A nonstudent must obtain the Class Auditor Permit and the consent of the instructor and Assistant Dean and must also pay a twenty-dollar auditor’s fee for each course; those who are sixty-five or older are exempt from this fee. In general, only practicing lawyers and judges, graduates of the Law School, and graduates of other ABA-approved law schools will be permitted to audit law courses.
A separate, additional petition to the Assistant Dean is required to audit a first-year course. Auditors are permitted only when space is available. No more than five auditors are allowed in any section. A person may audit only one first-year law course a semester and may audit a total of no more than four courses.
Nothing in these rules prohibits an instructor from permitting guests and visitors.
Please note: Spring 2021 auditing is only allowed online. You may not audit courses in person.
If you meet the above criteria, please complete the following steps for Auditing:
- Obtain a Class Auditor Permit from this page: https://onestop.utexas.edu/forms/#StudentRecords
- Check with the Student Affairs Office to ensure that your requested course is still open.
- Get preliminary verbal approval from the Assistant Dean for Student Affairs.
- Secure the signature of the instructor for each course to be audited.
- Get final written approval from the Assistant Dean for Student Affairs.
- Deliver the completed Class Auditor Permit to the Student Affairs Office for duplication and processing.
- For individuals under the age of 65 who are not currently registered at the University, a fee of $20 per course is required. After duplication, the Student Affairs Office will return the original Class Auditor Permit to you and you must walk it over to the cashier (Office of Accounting) in the Main Building, Room 8, to pay the fee. The cashier will then forward the paid permit to the Office of the Registrar for processing.
