    Law Students for the Arts Speaker Series

    Erin Rodgers, an attorney with Texas Accountants and Lawyers for the Arts (TALA), and UT Law alum John Spong, who now writes for Texas Monthly Magazine, will be speaking on their careers in law and the arts. Professor David Sokolow will moderate the panel.

    TALA is a non-profit organization that helps meet the legal and accounting needs of artists and arts nonprofits across the State of Texas by matching low-income artists and small budget arts nonprofits with volunteer attorneys and accountants to assist with arts-related legal and financial matters.

    In 2010, John Spong was nominated for a National Magazine Award in the category of Leisure Interests for his story about Texas dance halls, “Step Right Up." He has been a finalist for the Texas Institute of Letters’ O. Henry Award for Magazine Journalism four times, which he won in 2006 for “The Good Book and the Bad Book” and again in 2010 for “Holding Garmsir.” He was also named 2005 Writer of the Year by the City and Regional Magazine Association.

    Emerging Energy Issues in Latin America

    Expert lawyers from South America will discuss issues that are of particular relevance to energy practitioners in Latin America and give their perspectives on the challenges and rewards of practicing energy law in their respective countries.     ACS Lunch - Rob Owen - Skinner at SCOTUS

    The American Constitution Society is hosting a lunch with Professor Rob Owen on April 4 at 11:30am in the Fleming Room, down by George's Cafe. Free lunch will be provided.

    Professor Rob Owen will discuss the Capital Punishment Clinic's recent victory in the Supreme Court in Skinner v. Switzer. The Supreme Court held: a postconviction procedural due process claim for DNA testing is properly pursued in a §1983 action. Professor Owen will discuss what this ruling means for his client, Hank Skinner, his reactions to the ruling, and what it means for the future of DNA testing in the courts.

    Ernest Young:A New Federalism Revival?

    Former UT Law Professor Ernest Young returns to give a talk entitled, "A New Federalism Revival?" Young posits that just as Rehnquist's court-led federalist revival may be petering out, public controversies (healthcare, immigration, gay rights, state debt, etc.) have forced federalism back onto the national agenda.     Street Law will be hosting middle school and high school students from the Austin area to participate in a day of learning about practical issues and to get acquainted with higher education.     Speaker will be Marilda Rosado, who is a professor at Rio de Janeiro State University School of Law. Professor Rosado is also a partner at Doria Jacobina Rosado e Gondinho law firm. She formerly worked for the National Petroleum Agency in Brazil as the Bidding Superintendent and later was head of the Legal Affairs Department of a subsidiary of Petrobras.

    ACS Study Break with Prof. Bickerstaff

    On April 11th at 3pm in the Fleming Room, ACS will host a study break talk with Professor Steve Bickerstaff. Prof. Bickerstaff served as Parliamentarian of the Texas Senate and special assistant Texas Attorney General before founding the private law firm of Bickerstaff & Heath in 1980. The firm continues to be one of the premier election law firms in the country. Currently he is an Adjunct Professor at UT Law teaching courses on voting and election law. At the study break, he will discuss redistricting in Texas, both in 2003 and in 2011.

    Ryan Robinson, the City of Austin Demographer, will present his analysis of the latest U.S. Census data for Austin and what it means for historically disadvantaged groups in the region.     Vis Moot Court Competition

    The Energy Center is proud to be sponsoring a team of UT Law Students who will travel to Vienna to participate in the 18th annual Willem C. Vis International Commercial Arbitration Moot (Vis Moot). The Vis Moot is a competition for law students. Students from all countries are eligible. The Moot involves a dispute arising out of a contract of sale between two countries that are party to the United Nations Convention on Contracts for the International Sale of Goods. The contract provides that any dispute that might arise is to be settled by arbitration in Danubia, a country that has enacted the UNCITRAL Model Law on International Commercial Arbitration and is a party to the Convention on the Recognition and Enforcement of Foreign Arbitral Awards. The arbitral rules to be applied rotate yearly among the arbitration rules of co-sponsors of the Moot.

    Enforced Disappearances in Mexico

    Ariel Dulitzky, Director of the UT Human Rights Clinic, is a member of the United Nations Working Group on Enforced or Involuntary Disappearances. He just returned from Mexico where he was part of a fact-finding mission on the situation of enforced disappearances. He will present and discuss the preliminary observations of the Working Group mission. In a broader perspective, Prof. Dulitzky will analyze the relationship and interactions between an international human rights mechanism, the Mexican government and civil society organizations.

    Dr. Ricardo Ainslie, a professor in the Department of Education Psychology, will serve as a discussant. He directed the film "¡Ya Basta!" ("Enough!), a disturbing, intimate documentary on the epidemic of kidnappings and related crimes that started in Mexico in the '90s.

    GPPDR Symposium in Dispute Resolution

    Robert O'Neil, former President of University of Virginia and professor of law emeritus law will address the (GPPDR symposium) on his experiences with ADR, from his initial encounter with Roger Fisher and Frank Sander as a Harvard Law student, to exploring ADR as chair of Virginia's first state commission on the future of its judicial system, to his directorship of the Ford Foundation's Difficult Dialogues as an application of new approaches to meeting campus tensions over issues such as race, religion, sexual orientation, and immigration. Prof. O’Neil then will look to a few promising areas for ADR exploration in current Church & State law. Law and graduate GPPDR students will present research papers in dispute resolution throughout the day.
